Games of the future to be fun, not difficult - Miyamoto

mistermostyn | August 14, 2007 | News | Wii DS
If you're constantly perplexed by the complex control systems and steeply arched learning curves apparent in many of today's videogame offerings, then Shigeru Miyamoto's latest words of wisdom will be music to your ears. Yes, the Nintendo legend wants games to be fun, not difficult. Imagine THAT!
Nintendo’s increasing commitment to casual gamers is plain, and now Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto has said that future games from the company will have a stronger focus on fun and immediacy, and will steer clear of being overly difficult. Forthcoming Wii platformer Super Mario Galaxy, explained Miyamoto to Japanese magazine Famitsu, would typify this new approach.

Well Difficulty is what makes me more intelligent in games and life. Nothing is easy. But i guess its good for little kids and adults who don't have alot of time for games.

There's a crowd who likes hardcore games and a crowd who likes casual games. Nintendo will realize it eventually.

This can be a good AND bad thing. As twilightprince said, some gamers like casual games, and others like "hardcore" games. Some people will prefer easy non-challenging games, some won't.

But "fun" doesn't neccessarily mean "easy". Sometimes I like a bit of a challenge. It can be disappointing when games are TOO easy. Hell, even a lot of "child-oriented" Nintendo 64 games had their difficult parts. Take Mario 64's "Bowser levels" - They could be a bitch to get through before you got the hang of them.

I think this is a great idea for some more of the casual gamers and younger kids who don't want a steep learning curve for playing games. Though at the same time, I hope they don't just go for easy games.

As like Gothic Girl, I prefer a challenge here and there. A game that you can simply fly through in a few hours just because it was too easy takes some of the fun right out of it and will make me not want to play it too much, unless it has something to make me wanna keep playing like a storyline or getting it 100% completed.

Anyway, I just hope they balance this right and give a bit of an idea from their point of view of what an easy and fun game is.

Lesser challenging games really means they are targeting children. Usually, the kids bring their older siblings or parents into the game because it gets difficult for them, but that won't be the case if they go through with this.

I like challenges like others above...I mean, if it's difficult as hell like Ninja Gaiden, sure frustration may come, but if the gameplay is addicting and such, story is appealing, it's worth it to keep trying, like Play ISDF mentioned.

It's not a bad idea to have some more less challenging games, but they'll have to make it have a much longer fun factor, which is difficult, no doubt. And I'd prefer all the games to not go by this theory.

Nintendo is trying to cover the fact that their games are for 6 year-olds.

I don't know about everyone else, but I love to play through every game I get on the most difficult level it offers. That's FUN to me. Sitting up until I'm barely even awake trying to beat the same level that I've been playing for 3 hours is fun.

I kind of agree with you, as at times I do find harder difficulty more fun, because it's more rewarding when you eventually accomplish it. However overall I disagree, I want to always be having fun and quite a lot of the time I am not when I'm constantly being killed and such.

I feel the same way, though there is a delicate balance between fun and difficulty. I think 3 hours for one level is a little extreme, unless the developer makes it not frustrating.

I don't care if a lot of games are easy, I just want Zelda Wii to make me want to kill myself in terms of difficulty.

I want the games to be difficult but not too difficult, but difficult games shouldnt be removed because i guess there are people with opinions different than mine.

I really do hope he was talking about the Wii's future...games in general basically NEED difficulty. I mean, let's start from Pac-Man...what happened when you passed each stage? It got more difficult, therefore, making it MORE fun...no, I'm not convinced.

Some of the best games were difficult. It gave you the sense to play it longer and beat the game. But if a game is fun, then I guess that's ok with me.

I'm not surprised that Nintendo went this route...or will, eventually..

Thats how Nintendo is competing...with easy, fun games for casual gamers and kids...

    My bro has often needed my help in his games...Too bad he won't be getting a Wii (unless it is out of his own pocket) as my mom and stepdad have already firmly said they won't get him another one ;;

Shut up Miyamoto I'm sick to my stomach of this whole Nintendo way of thinking. For the most part, I don't like simple, pick up n play games. I do like challenging games because the difficulty and the challenge is what I find fun. GASP imagine that! I will never forget when Miyamoto said that gamers don't want games that are too deep with complex storylines and difficult gameplay. ??? Who are you to tell me what I want? Its just like the whole graphics argument from Nintendo. A game can be extremely fun, challenging, and have amazing graphics all at the same time. Yes its true. Its cool that Nintendo is doing what they do and its working for them, but the minute the rest of the industry turns into a flock of sheep, is the minute I stop playing videogames.

I know its as if he thinks were stupid and should choose what we want to play. I like complex games and such, i also like fun games.
But clearly he making some of us out to be morons and can't think for our selves.

Well, this can be good, and this could turn out horribly wrong. Let's hope that third parties don't take the same approach and give us some difficult but yet also fun games for a change of pace.

They should make some difficult games, and some casual. Different people like different levels of play.

Well, like said, just because a game is fun, doesn't mean it is easy. Sure, some games are fun and easy, but some are fun with a challenge. Miyamoto is just saying they will focus more on making it fun, not just hard. Sure it could be a challenge still, but a fun challenge.

It's better if they focus on fun and difficulty and try not to make games easy. Because easy and fun games become boring after a short while.
