In one of the rare instances where a book has been created from a video game, DICE has authorized the writing of novel for Battlefield 3, authored by a former SAS operator.

The book tells the back-story of RU Special Forces operator Dima, one of the hero soldiers featured in the Battlefield 3 single-player campaign narrative. Having first-hand experience of the drama and trauma of real war, McNab and co-author Grimsdale bring an authentic voice and heart-wrenching perspective to the story.

I never trust an FPS to carry a decent story anyway - unless there is a Bioshock in the title - so this will be a nice little bonus. I'm also a McNab fan so double points for marketing.

Bioshock's story was actually an almost complete rip off of System Shock 2. I recommend playing that game as it's one of the best PC games ever made.

Depends on how generous you want to be with the term spiritual.

No, Deus Ex was, Bioshock was almost a literal copy.

Bioshock was made by the same devs that made SS2, after becoming 2K Games. Deus Ex was made by Ion Storm, not them. so if anything Bioshock is the spiritual successor.

System Shock and System Shock 2 were made by Looking Glass Studios. This company became defunct and then assimilated with Ion Storm, who developed Deus Ex shortly afterwards.

Incorrect, and correct. Doug Church was the main guy for System Shock working with Looking Glass. System Shock 2 was done by Looking Glass and Irrational Games (headed by Ken Levine). When Looking Glass went defunct some of them moved to Ion Storm, including Doug Church who went to be one of the people who worked on Deus Ex. Seven years later Ken Levine headed Bioshock, taking heavy inspiration from System Shock and System Shock 2.

Both Deus Ex and Bioshock are spiritual successors to SS and SS2, and both Ion Storm and 2K is made up of teams which include ex-Looking Glass and Irrational Games people who worked on the two originals.

Alright then, I never trust an FPS - unless it has 'Shock' in its title - to carry a good story.

FPS never carries a good story most of the time.
But this could change my mind.
