Homebrewers crack DVD playback on Nintendo Wii

mistermostyn | August 20, 2007 | News | Wii Gaming Tech/Hardware
Are you a Wii fan left somewhat disgruntled by Nintendo's decision not to include DVD playback in their machine? Would you have paid more for its integration? Well, if you're handy with modding then DVD playback could well be yours - if you're prepared to swiftly void your warranty. Though, who's heard of the Wii breaking down? It's not like it's made by Microsoft (hohoho).
Now homebrewers Team Symbiote have developed Wii Media Player MFE, which allows gamers to play actual DVDs on their console with one catch - you'll have to mod your Wii first, voiding the warranty in the process.

If the fuss of performing surgery on your Wii isn't bad enough, Wiinja reports that the mod will also cause significant damage to your console's laser over time, given that it isn't built to function non-stop as is necessary to play DVDs.

It's sad that it needed to be hacked to run DVDs.

Just how outdated is the Wii?

Outdated? The feature is left out. And for good reason: DVD players are dirt-cheap.

You want outdated? Go find a DVD drive that only burns CDs.

I'm talking about everything, it's using an old CPU an old GPU and it doesn't even play DVDs.

        Good game Wii kid.

Agreed. Though I would still stick to the DVD Player for watching movies, and Wii for playing games.

Exactly underpowered, underpowered is code for old shit... I mean i could say my PC is underpowered but that doesn't stop the tech within it being old... And its more outdated not to have DVD playback than to include it, hell the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player but it still plays every other disc format out there except HD-DVD.

Shouldn't have to buy a new console to allow for something it should do as standard.
