The Nintendo Wii has done it. It is now officially outselling the Xbox 360. The week ending August 23rd was the date that the unique little console took the top position in the console war. With 10.57 million consoles sold for the Wii and the Xbox 360 at 10.51 things look good for Nintendo. Still, the Playstation 3 lags at 4.32 million.
Two years ago, very few analysts would have predicted the Nintendo Wii would be market leader this generation against the established Playstation and Xbox brands. But analysts can be in error: Vgchartz.com data, which is based on sample data from retailers all over the world indicates that the week ending August 23rd Nintendo's Wii (which was released one year after the Xbox 360 in November 2006), currently standing at 10.57 million consoles sold, passed Xbox 360 lifetime sales of 10.51 million units, making Nintendo the new market leader in both the home and handheld videogame console businesses.

The PS3 is doing terrible XD I'm sure it will pick up, but if it isn't soon, it will not be able to get close to the Wii.
Kudos to Nintendo though.
Ah, it was only a matter of time. It still selling out quite often in many areas of the world. I'm surprised how it only took them 9 months to catch up to a 21-month-old console, though. It's quite shocking to see Nintendo become so successful after the relatively low sales of the N64 and Gamecube (although the former still sold quite well). It's currently the fastest selling console ever, and it came out just after the poorest selling last generation console (excluding the Dreamcast, but that was discontinued before the GC came out).
I hope companies actually take Wii devleopment seriously now.
Next it will be PS3 that takes over the 360.
In a few years, Nintendo will unveil a brand new console, anyways. Innovation was the way to go.
Probably best that I didn't post this actually; it would have been more "Mwahahahahaa!" and posting a picture of the front cover of "The Return of the King".
All hail Nintendo, heroes rise again
Obliterating every other brand
Nothing can stop you now
Old games bring you back your crown
When there seemed to be nothing left to lose, you win
Bow your heads low!
All hail Nintendo!
Suffered long and then choose to try the Wii
Only through that trial could you once more find the strength you need
It's never over, just another day
Of hope and tragedies and innovation the industry sends our way
Determintation of the strong
Found your lost wisdom again after so long

Nothing can stop you now

All hail Nintendo!
Somewhere in chaos we might find the last one on the shelves
This world reconstruction is but one tale we tell
Non-gamers for games, and games for Non-gamers
Deeper players for deeper play, and deeper play for deep players
Let there never be hole inside your heart
Determintation of the strong
Found your lost wisdom again after so long
