Microsoft: We're in a better position than our rivals this Xmas

mistermostyn | August 25, 2007 | News | Playstation 3 Wii
The seasonal corporate back biting has started early this year, with Microsoft following up on its UK hardware price cut by once again slapping Sony for the forced inclusion of Blu-ray before then announcing that Xmas will be a better time for Xbox than any of its rivals.
As the run-up to Christmas slowly shifts up into a higer gear, you can guarantee that the gaming industry's big boys will start throwing verbal punches at one another in unashamedly self-gratifying statements.

Microsoft's latest slur concerns the Xbox 360 price cut. The firm's UK marketing manager, Dan Cornelius has said that the recently discounted price will attract consumers in the market for a console away from Sony's PlayStation 3.

I honestly don't know anyone with a 360 or PS3 on their X-Mas list, but those that I know do want a Wii

The 360 does have it very good this run around, but I don't think they have it best. The Wii is still selling strong and has some fantastic games coming out, but between the two, I can't decide who has it best. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

They do have a great position this holiday season. It is under some good demand, especially with many new games, and it will probably outsell the PS3 without much trouble this holiday season. The Wii is having a few supply issues and it is still difficult to get one now, and the demand will be even higher when the holiday season comes.

Microsoft is in a good position to push out a lot of units.

I have no idea what's on Microsoft's list, but are they certain that they can keep up with the Wii's upcoming games on the holidays: Super Smash bros. Brawl, Super Mario galaxy and Mario Kart Wii? Only time will tell I suppose.

Personally, I think the Wii line-up is better from now until this holiday season, but that isn't everything. Remember, the demand is still high for the Wii (it just topped NPD sales again, even over the DS) and Nintendo is having trouble increasing their supply due to a lack of a certain chip. Unless they can significantly increase their monthly units in early November, they'll have a limited supply this holiday season. Microsoft won't. Coupled with the decent demand it already has and a number of big titles, as well as a price drop, it is in a great position.

What big titles does the Wii have coming out this year besides Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros, and Metroid Prime, and why does that little list sound so familiar? Between the PS3 and the 360, we get BioShock, Halo 3, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Warhawk, Splinter Cell Conviction, Kane & Lynch, Uncharted, Haze, Assassin's Creed, Alan Wake, Ratchet & Clank, etc. and thats not even including GTA IV, which got delayed. I honestly don't understand how anyone over the age of 14 or anyone with an attention span longer than 20 minutes can look forward to the Wii lineup.

It the quality of the games that count the most, not the quantity.

Agreed. Even one good game can have more sales than five bad games.

Thank you for proving my point. Logically, one would think that more games will be available on the Wii for many reasons. The Wii is obviously the most inexpensive console to develop for and also because of the style of the system, many games will be very simple pick up and play types. Look at the lineup out now. >90% of the games are very simple and geared toward short play times. If thats what you're into, then fine thats cool, but I'm not into corny, simple games with small worlds and no real depth. I'm not dissing the Wii, its just not for me. Besides, can anyone sit here and say my list above is quantity and not quality?

The problem is your opinion is clearly misinformed. You only mentioned the 3 most popular games, and only first party games(not even second or third party titles). There are many more potentially excellent games coming out, and no, they aren't all geared at people under 14 (by the way, the average Wii owner is over 18). It isn't lacking in quantity. The games aren't all "corny, simple games with small worlds and no real depth". Don't let their art style fool you, Battalion Wars II(if as challenging as the first) and Zack and Wiki are both complex (and hard as hell) games. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (and the already-released RE4) are both clearly aimed at the older crowd, and UC has impressed in it's earlier stages and is constantly being improved upon. No More Heroes is another extremely violent, twisted game by Suda 51. Oh, and don't forget Manhunt 2, being released on Halloween. It's already gotten some very impressive scores. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is definitely interesting, as well, as a sequel to the Saturn's beloved cult classic. Medal of Honor Heroes 2 is a console exclusive, and it is being built from the ground up for the Wii with 32 player online (no, it doesn't use friend codes, and it is server-based).

This isn't the Gamecube or N64. First party titles are not all the console is getting. Saying the games don't appeal to you is one thing, but saying that it shouldn't appeal to anyone above the age of 14 is just plain ignorant.

All three consoles are going to be in a good position, the 360's are selling pretty good as always, Wii's are still flying out the door and the PS3 finally had some good games
