A former Naughty Dog employee claims that Sony pressured the developer to create Uncharted instead of an unnamed fantasy title in order to appeal to an older audience. In this piece, I share my reaction to his comments.

In a recent interview, a former environment modeler for Naughty Dog revealed that before Uncharted, the studio was working on a fantasy title. He claims that pressure from Sony influenced the studio to create Nathan Drake’s adventures to compete with the gritty shooters that were emerging and appealing to an older demographic. Is Sony overstepping boundaries by influencing the design of games, or are they just practicing good business?

Sony ultimately foots the bill you would assume they have some say in what a development studio they own will make. In the end if they were forced Naughty Dog were forced into making one of the greatest game series in history, so I doubt Naughty Dog are all that bitter about it.

Considering how well most of Sony's franchises turn out, I have no problem with them doing this.
