Recently, Halo 3 was confirmed to not support clans. A huge multiplayer franchise without any clan support? Is this blasphemy? Maybe not. Loot Ninja has written a brief article concerning clans and if they are actually needed in online gaming.

Okay, sure they are fun and almost all clans consist of only hardcore gamers, but clans tend to like to gang up on outsiders or other people that don't have clans. This could force or scare off gamers from the game, preventing more and more people to stop playing. What do you think? Are clans a necessity in online gaming?

I’ve been in clans and had a great time. I’ve also been in games against clan members when I was not a member of a clan only to have them gang up on all non-clan members. The non-clan members dropped promptly from the game, saying it’s just not fun to be ganged up on. With the huge influx of new gamers online, could clans become a reason for many of these people to stop playing online?

Clan support is no be all or end all of any game. I mean people made clans pretty easily on Gears Of War unofficially so what's the problem here.

However it would have been nice. I personally had no idea since I am reading as little news as possible on Halo 3 before its release.

Whenever I play a game online, I always servers with any players with a bunch of weird symbols and a few letters before their name, because I hate playing with clans because all I ever get is crap from them. There'll still be clans in just about any online game despite a game supporting it or not, so Halo 3 won't really have a huge impact on them.

They are needed, but the system is not necessary in the games. I mean as stated before Gears has them, which means it is possible on any other online game.
