Microsoft advertise their games franchises like Gears of War, Forza and Halo they all get advertising campaigns that start 3-4 weeks before release and carry on 4-5 weeks after release. This is the sole difference between Microsoft's strategy and Sony's strategy and over the years it shows, games like Halo 3 sell 12+ million units and games like Uncharted 2 barely scrape 2-3 million.
Though this isn't the only reason. I have noticed over the years Playstation 3 gamers talk up their massive franchises you'll never see them shut up about how many exclusives they have, you'll also never hear them stop saying how much better they are yet when push comes to shove they don't buy them.. There are 60 million Playstation 3 owners out there a good sales yield from that should be about 12-15 million units for each high profile release, when that yield is 2-3 million and that's considered "good" by Sony standards the customers are doing something wrong.
For some reason Xbox 360 owners talk up their games a hell of a lot but statistics and sales figures show a vast majority have actually bought and played them. Maybe it's down to marketing which Microsoft does get right, but I think even if Sony started aggressive marketing tactics their consumer base just doesn't buy enough games full stop so it would be a waste.
Granted, it's not like EVERY 360 exclusive sells 12M; generally it's only Gears and Halo that manage that. But the point remains.
does it come down to demographics? the 360 probably has a lot more younger gamers than PS3 does, and hence their parents are likely the ones making the purchases, where as PS3 has a lot of college age gamers who might have more important things to buy than games. that could be a big part of it.
