The UK's education system is not up to the standard required for the country to compete in the global games industry, according to a report.

Ian Livingstone, Life President of Eidos, said to Newsnight, 'We're very very good at making games'. However, he says, 'we need the skills. We need computer scientists, animators, artists and there aren't enough of them'. The lack of skills, he claims, is down to the way computers are used in schools. He said the classroom had been 'hijacked by ICT', which he described as 'useful but boring'.

Livingstone is one of the authors of a report entitled Next Gen. Along with his co-author, managing director and co-founder of Double Negative Ltd Alex Hope, he recommends that computer science should be brought into the National Curriculum. Surveys mentioned in the report suggest that only around 2% of young people answered 'United Kingdom' when asked where games including Grand Theft Auto were developed.
