It's news that we've come to expect but it's somewhat grating news none the less. Battlefield 3 will incorporate an online pass that is required to play the game online.

I dont think you understand, if you pre-order the game, it will come with an online pass. This is not a monthly payment like LIVE, it is a access card to unlock multiplayer options. If you buy the game new, the card comes with the game, if you buy the game used, you have to buy the card. This is not surprising at all. EA has already shown to support the online pass. Cancelling your pre-order is a lose-lose situation for you, but you are not going to be charged anything else.

Its just as ShadowGuard said, The online pass is a redeem code that is included in a new copy of Battlefield 3, so it's a free inclusion. However if you were planning to purchase the game used, then you would have to purchase an online pass separately.

I'm ok with paying for online passes so long as they keep them optional and it's not used game retailers that I'm paying the extra money to.

Oh thank the Lord. I was thinking here we go with EA's version of that CoD: Elite bullcrap pass. The producer's of Call of Duty are trying to milk it for everything it's worth, at least this is different. Here I was thinking it was in the same vein.
