Japan's Top 20 Best Selling Games: PSP Takes Spot #1

xsynergyx | August 28, 2007 | News | Playstation 2 Wii
Pink Godzilla has listed the top 20 best selling games in Japan of 2007, so far.
The Playstation Portable snatches first place with the hit game, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd(Monster Hunter Freedom 2). However, the Nintendo DS takes 14 of the top 20 games. The PSP only getting that one, while the Playstation 2 gets a couple more. The Nintendo Wii takes the rest.
Every one knows that the Nintendo DS has been dominating the sales charts in Japan ever since the release of the DS Lite. Strong hardware sales, however, don't necessarily translate into dominant software sales. Case in point, in Japan the #1 selling game of 2007 is not for the NDS but a PSP exclusive.

The Japanese market sure likes Monster Hunter. When that game came out, PSP sales dramatically spiked up over there.

Phoenix Wright 4 (Gyakuten Saiban 4) is surprisingly popular. The game used to look like it would only appeal to a niche audience, but it seems to be quite successful.

GTA: San Andreas seems to be surprisingly successful, as well. Is Capcom doing a good job distributing the game there?

Surprisingly, in the top 100, there is only one PS3 title and no 360 titles. I suppose they aren't doing as well there as they are in North America. I wish they posted more than just the top 20. Going by just that, it seems that the DS is still extremely strong, and the PS2 and Wii both pulling off some good sales, with some PSP games in the mix.
