Far Cry, Crytek's revolutionary FPS released in early 2004, is now available for free download from FilePlanet based off in-game advertising support. From the same geniuses behind the upcoming Crysis and CryEngine 2, Far Cry is well worth checking out for the advances it made in graphics, AI, and engine dynamics, and for having kickass gameplay and plot.

There is a catch however, the game free version of the game will come with in-game advertising. I'm not sure to what extent this is, but I imagine it to be bearable. I'm also not sure if this download includes the original sandbox editor. Actually, after seeing the screenshot fileplanet is using, I'm not even sure if this is the original FarCry. Especially seeing as you'll be playing as the famous ' John Carver'?

If you've never played FarCry or you don't currently own it, then I suggest you head over to FilePlanet for the free 2.7GB download. It should tie you over until the Crysis demo is released on the September 25th. Note that a paid subscription is NOT required to download FarCry, it's 100% free and supported by in-game ads. Also note that Crytek has no involvement in this. Ubisoft has full-rights to FarCry so if this version of the game is screwed, then blame ubisoft, not Crytek.

    Cool.

I really want to download it, but that 2.7 GB download will probably take me 2 days to download.

Awesome. I wonder to what extent the in-game advertising goes. If it's like signs on buildings or something that can't be too bad, I hope. Unfortunately, I can't find out because my computer can't handle even this game until my upgrades arrive in teh mail.

It's not exactly "free" for some people, as some people (like me) have to pay money to access FilePlanet in the first place. It sounded like the good thing at first, too.

Nah mate, you can make a free account and download it off the public servers fine.

Ok, the game actually runs fine for me, so now I can tell you how the ads are. The advertising only shows up in the menu and loading screens of the game, so they aren't really intrusive at all, just not pretty to look at.
