Microsoft Losing It's One Year Headstart In New Console Sales!

ITANI | September 06, 2007 | News | Playstation 3 Wii Company
While the Xbox 360 does truly have a head start it still fails to create a profit for Microsoft as now Microsoft is losing money in new console sales and that's not counting hardware failure. Here is a chart showing how strong each console is according to sales.
Microsoft had originally set a target of 15 million Xbox 360s by the middle of 2007, but dropped that target down to 12 million. Even with lowered expectations, the company was still unable to meet its goal, having only shipped 11,600,000 units by the end of June.

Plagued by “red ring of death” hardware issues, the Xbox 360 narrowly edged ahead of the PS3 in July sales, with NPD reporting retail sales of 170,000 units. However, Microsoft’s console unit sales lead over the PS3 fell from comfortable 100,000 units in June to a margin of only 11,000 in July.

Well, it's not a surprise that sales for the system have slowed down. Who would buy one knowing that is has a large chance to break down? Hell, I was going to buy one, but not anymore until they fix that problem.

Agreed. Microsoft really should decrease their system's probability to break down. I was going to buy one too, but not until reading this article.

While Windows Enthusiasts like to deride PS3 sales as low, Sony’s relatively high priced console is selling at identical levels to Microsoft’s 360 figures from last year after its initial stumble out of the gate.

In other words, the PS3 is matching the Xbox 360’s first year sales while 360 itself isn’t, allowing Sony to incrementally catch up while Microsoft languishes with static sales.
You know i could have sworn i and other have said this many times, finally someone says it.

That’s why Sony’s older PlayStation 2--with the largest installed base by far of any console--continues to dominate the sales of video game titles in the billion dollar a month video game industry.
Well What happened to 360 having a larger install base, maybe compared to PS3. But Still something Sony can gloat and be proud of.

By March 2008, Nintendo forecasts sales of 22.3 million Wii consoles
Don't count your chickens b4 they hatch Nintendo. I know your system is doing very good, but even you don't know thats only going to happen. For all we know sony can explode in sales with PS3. But im sure Wii can get up to 15 million by then.

finalblade...I don't even know what to say to you anymore. Are you honestly serious with yourself? How old are you? Who cares that PS2 has a larger installed base than the 360? Thats an obvious statistic. I don't even like the Wii, but they have sold 10+ million units in 7 months, without Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Fit, or Super Smash Bros. You really think they're only going to sell 15 million total by next March? Be for real. Why do you think it says forecast? Do you know what a weather forecast is? Its a prediction based on real figures.

While it might be obvious that the PS2 has a larger install base than the 360 it's something that seems to be forgotten a lot too.

I mean as far as the next generation console is going, Microsoft and Nintendo are definitely doing better than Sony. But as a whole, out of sheer number of consoles sold per company, Sony outshines the rest.

Not to mention the larger your install base be it Playstation 1 or Playstation 2 is a huge advanatage next year and the year after when those owners upgrade... If the remaining 118 million PS2 owners upgrade to the PS3 over the next 2-3 years not even the Wii will be able to catch up.

Who cares if you don't like the wii. My point is that they don't even know there going to get that much by march of 2008. Also if you forgot i submitted an article saying the Wii won't have any consoles until January 08. So they think there going to get 19 million more sales in 3 months yeah right. Here is the link.

I know what that is but even forecasts or prediction aren't 100% true, anything can change, Thats the beauty of predictions there guesses that can or will happen. Its not 100% proof or true that it will, same as this.

This just shows that Microsoft can't win. Release the console a year earlier and it gets lots of hardware defects

Wait a couple of months later while fine tuning it and you lose the head start and get slaughtered

Oh and am I reading that graph wrong or does it say 6.80 million PS3's sold?

They're getting ready to upgrade the 360 with better hardware. And it's always possible that Microsoft can make a comeback if they use the right ways.

no way, their reputation is already ruined! No comeback possible anymore. Like the dreamcast. Once it's over, it's over. Had some great games, but it's SOny and Nintendo that always pull through. Next up , Toshiba!..? Or maybe Samsung? Let them try..

This is Microsoft's mistake. They had too much of a headstart that they didn't check that problem which causes many gamers to complain.

I must say, Microsoft should start at the exact same time as Nintendo and Sony, and they could have a chance to get more titles up and running to compete with there fellow rivals.

Like now, Gears of Wars is merely into extinction. If they waited enough time, GoW could end up as 2007 game of the year. But alas, it cannot.

is it just me, or does wii and ps3 feel a little more next gen because microsoft released 360 early? microsoft was saying it was worth it but in the end, its not. while microsoft was laughing and counting their money, ninty and sony were polishing their consoles, waiting for the day that the console was ready, not the company.

Actually you make a good point and i agree with you. Both Sony and Nintendo made some technical advancements in there systems that completely blew there predecessors out of the water, while MS just added what they did to there xbox 1. It still feels the same but with HD graphics and some beefed up specs. I truly think Sony and Nintendo are next gen, and truly are the game market geniuses. I mean Some can argue that MS just came in to get money and such, while Sony and Nintendo are in for the gamers and to make great games which in the end will make them the money.
Don't take this as what i think im just generalizing what some may think.
Though what i just said could be possible. I mean MS jumped in early to get a head start and make mad dough and be ahead but it seems it shot them back in the end. Imo i don't think MS can truly become successful in this business, i mean they haven't made any money in the six years they were here, and they lost 6 billion dollars to Boot. But im just stating whats been said b4, it seems that way, to me at least.
