A recent study by Electronic Entertainment Design and Research has complied a study that shows what type of game and game rating sells best. You may find it surprising that higher rated games sell five times more than lower rated games. Is it because people find it cool to have higher rated games? Is it because people like the gore and violence of the game?

Notably, according to the study, mature-rated titles, comprising 10 percent of all US retail games examined, have both the highest average MetaCritic scores and the highest average gross sales in the United States -- despite the fact that some major retailers decline to sell them.

If you think about it, Video Games really started taking off in the 90's...it appealed to some adults but the mass market was to children...Games like Mario, Donkey Kong etc. Now we are in 2007 and that entire age of young gamers are now in here late teens/twenties and are looking for more mature games to suit their age and maturity.

Its no surprise really. In 2017 its going to be the same with the younger ones. I think people need to realize that Higher rating=higher sales.

The reason that the higher the game is rated the more it sells is because it is just a better game in most cases.

Does anyone know that the average game demographic nowadays in terms of age is the 18-35 age bracket? It makes common sense, ffs.

I can only imagine what Jack Thompson would say. I just find the higher rated games to be more fun, not that I don't have a few lower rated games.

You have your PSX generation moving into a new age bracket, it's natural that they're going to progress into new ratings sales as well. Of course as DFK pointed out, Jack Thompson would probably have a field day with this claiming it's a lie and no adult enjoys these titles.

Well it's comman sense though! Children don't really have that much money to buy games and they really only like G and PG games whereas Older Gamers have money to spend on the games they like so theres no surprise there!
