PS3 Home To Feature 18+ Area

Linkin Park Fan | September 12, 2007 | News | Playstation 3
A response from a Sony Cheif told us that HOME will have 18+ areas. In these you can watch trailers for movies and games that are aimed for people that are 18+. These area's are mostly here to keep Sony out of trouble so they won't get attacked for showing adult content to minors. This is a good step to making sure that HOME will be a safe place for everyone.
Q: Will we see areas that you have to be 18 in order to enter?

PE: Yes, probably. In the short-term, there probably won’t be many but in the long-term, we expect to see them. For instance, a casino or even somewhere you can go and see 18-rated trailers for games. That isn’t anything particularly sinister, but obviously, you’d have to prevent 12-year-olds going in there. Obviously, there are other 18-plus areas that you could imagine, but some of those might not come to fruition. But we have the ability to age-protect areas, and I think that’s something that we will inevitably make use of.

It was to be expected... Every world has a seedy and dirty side to it, why should Home be any different.

So like would we be able to see porn in the 18+ area's. But i like the idea it separates them. I think There birth date should allow or disallow them to enter.

I really honestly doubt you'd get to see Porn on PS3's home.

It just seems to be for stuff like say GTA's more violent trailers and gameplay footage or trailers for movies with gorey, horrific and softcore themes.

They have to, obviously...How else would they know you're 18+?

Course, did we not enter our age into account details? I could be wrong (might not of, can't remember for sure)...One way or another, they have to find our age out...

*waits to hear about parents shrieking that their kid was seeing that stuff, even though it was the kid's fault for lying about their age*

That's precisely my point...how do we know that they're not lying about their age? In any case, whether we did enter our date of birth in the account or not (don't remember...don't see the point either) it's not exactly fool proof...so they shouldn't really boast about their age restriction either.

Its up to the user, and the parents of kids with these consoles, to be aware of the age restriction...the consoles after all, do have ways of restricting out movies and games that are beyond a certain rating...

A LOT of online media requires the user to be honest about their age:

Sites with porn, videos on Youtube, videos on Gametrailers, etc. They all ask for some sort of verification, be it an actual Birth Date, or just a confirmation that you are, in fact, 18+

Its really more about covering their asses (Saying: "Not our problem if they blatantly lie to us about their age"), than them caring about who views the vids...

Basically, and place that requires age confirmation, is just doing it so they won't be sued...if they made it more difficult (require some sort of ID), they'd lose genuine customers (such as moi), who don't have ID that confims age, or just can't be arsed...

Hmm I have a feeling there talking about violent movies more than porn

True, but at the same time, if it's an 18+ are, there will probably be allowances made for whatever you want to show. Maybe including porn? :/

"there are other 18-plus areas that you could imagine, but some of those might not come to fruition."

    That definitely suggests porn.
