Sony are expected to be releasing the 40GB Playstation 3 for a small sum of $299 the same week that Halo 3 will be released for the Xbox 360 in order to attempt to pull some sales onto there hardware to keep up with the Xbox360. If this is true they will be releasing the confirmation at the Tokyo Games Show. Also it is planned that the Playstation 3 80GB version will be dropping down to $499 once all 60GB have sold out.

Sony may be trying to steal some thunder from the Xbox 360 launch of Halo 3 as they are expected to release a $399 40GB PS3 as well as a $99 price point for the PS3 at TGS.

It is a big task to try and steal anything away from Halo 3 but Sony may have to try to do it at the Tokyo Game Show if they hope at all of catching Microsoft and the Xbox 360 this generation before they pull away.

Analyst Pachter stated "We think that both of these ideas have merit, and note that Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai is the keynote speaker at next week’s TGW. If the rumors are true, we cannot think of a better forum for making such an announcement, given the event is less than a week before the launch of Microsoft and the Xbox 360’s Halo 3."

He also stated that the 80GB PS3 would receive a price drop to $499 once Sony clears out the stock of 60GB PS3 units which is very close.

Another PS3 price cut beyond that is expected in April 2008 which may drop the 80GB version to $399 and the 40GB version down to a mass-market price of $299.

We will have to wait and see but with all this news of price drops, I think it’s about time we get some games to go with them! Bring on TGS!

$299? Freakin' serious? I doubt that. Possibly £399, but I can see a $299 price-tag making a huge impact on the sales. As for the sales of Halo 3? I doubt it could do much. Whatever Sony do, it's sold a cool 3 million or so easily within the first week.

Will the 40GB version use software emulation or whatever its called?

BTW $299 sounds like an awesome deal for a PS3 tbh. Shame I'm getting one more expensive now than it will be soon.

if sony could pull that off, it would be amazing and they would sell out in a matter of days, but i dont think its going to happen

Oh my. This will obviously steal some of the Wii's thunder as well. If a 40 GB PS3 is $299 then a 20 GB must be less.

I think by that time. The 20 and 60GB versions will be out of stock.

A 300$ PS3 would be a steal. It would make the 360 look terribly overpriced. I mean an HD video playing next generation game console with free online service?

Not to mention a $300 PS3 would mean it'd be the cheapest Blu-Ray player as well and combat the sub $200 dollar HD-DVD players. That'd be crazy If It happened.

All Sony would need is a few more bangin' exclusives and dare I say it, they just might have a shot at taking this war sooner than any would've thought.

Well $299 is lower than what i thought, very interesting, i hope this is true. Besides if the 40GB version does come out its only going to be temporary, i mean didn't sony said thats there will be only one system.

Also you make a great point Volacide.

$299? So that translates to what $500 Australian? I reckon that would really boost sales, I think that would be almost as cheap as the Wii

    $299 is pretty cheap for a 40GB PlayStation 3. I bet 20GB will be around $149.

This would make the Xbox seriously overpriced.

    For $299 I would buy a PS3.

Also it depends on what they are leaving out. In terms of difference in 60 and 40GB.

        I don't think I'd use up 40gb on a PS3 so if it's 40gb or 60gb or even 20gb that wouldn't really matter much to me.

          Final Blade Sep 19, 07
I wasn't talking about size of the HD i was talking about leaving out like bluetooth or something like that to be cheaper and different to the 60GB.

Don't really see how an actual console could steal the thunder from a game.

Only a game can steal thunder from a game and only a console from a console. Nothing the actual PS3 does will really matter in terms of Halo 3. Too many people want to finish the fight.

Has any word been said on if this 40GB version is just a small time only type thing?

Not too many people want to finish the fight.
Fixed, they only want to play multiplayer and you know it. Of course thats what its known for, but even still the ending better be good or im going kick Bungie butt with angry letters

Wow, I just got caught in a lie! No, just no.

People have been waiting for three years to see the conclusion, there's not a Halo fan out there who isn't going to complete the story first.

Ask anyone on Xbox live or any Halo player on Neoseeker.

          Final Blade Sep 20, 07
Don't need to, i do play halo and i can tell you that while yes people want to see the ending for fun they really want Halo 3 for its multiplayer.

The title of the article is a bit misleading. When the 40 GB PS3 comes out it will be $400. Then they said in the springtime they'll do a pricecut of 100 dollars for the 80 GB and 40 GB. (making it $300 dollars) So it won't be right away but when it happens it should be a permanent price drop.

Oh freaking god! But i bet it'll be America only or something...
And anyway, PS3 Starter Pack is 4400 NIS (1100$ worth), so probably that price cut wouldnt matter THAT much, even if it will take place in Europe.

Well actually it could work. Because it is deep into the 360's price range. Basically it's the whole PS3 vs. Halo 3 here. The last thing Sony wants is for Halo 3 to outsell the PS3. Right now that looks like it's going to happen if not even this would work.
