EB Games bids farewell

SwiderMan | September 23, 2007 | News | Company Misc
Remember that store where you pre-ordered Mario Kart 64, bought your SNES, and found lots of used games all of the time? Well, EB Games is on its way out, according to Gaming Target. Two more retail stores still bearing the EB name have changed over to GameStop, which merged with EB in 2005. While we knew this was coming, it's sad to see a gaming chain we loved fade from existence.
Since EB Games and GameStop merged in 2005, some gamers will tell you the only thing that differentiates the two stores was the sign out front. As of last week, it looks like that final vestige of EB Games is beginning to come down as well.

They should have just let the EB Games that are still up and running stay named EB Games. Who gives a *bleep* what they're called.

Electronics Boutique died out in the UK a few years ago. Everywhere you go it's just GAME now.I think GameStation just got bought by GAME as well...

There are EB Games everywhere in Australia. I had no idea they were even being fazed out.

There are still a couple of EB Games in my area, but pretty much the majority of video game stores here are Gamestop's.

Whatever, I go to GameStop all the time anyways.

I doubt that this will be happening in Canada. Gamestop doesn't even exist here, and EB Games is the only major store chain that exclusively sells game-related products around here.

I'm guessing it's just dying in the US for now, and becoming Gamestop instead.

      You're actually quite wrong, there ARE gamestops in Canada...they are just few and far inbetween. We have one in the mall, and it is just a moments walk away from the EB that is in the same mall ;;

We have another (larger) EB just across from the mall too, it is a better one for pre-owned games...And easier to get to...

The Gamestop in the mall, is really kinda crappy (small, lacking in products)...but it DOES have card (YuGiOh) tournaments, sells some cosplay stuff (for rediculous prices)...And I think some of their games are cheaper...

They BETTER not change to Gamestop, my EBs....I like them the way they are, and if they become gamestops, well, I hear gamestops kinda suck, compared to EB...Well, if it does change, I hope it isn't by much...

Interesting. I never knew that. There are definitely no Gamestops in Ottawa, at least. Using the Store Locator, I found 50 EB Games outlets and no Gamestop outlets, and this was a 500 kilometer search. I guess they are there, but I doubt it would be worthwhile to change all those EB Games stores into Gamestops over here. If anything, it would hurt business. EB Games has a good reputation, Gamestop is virtually unknown throughout most of Canada.

I do think the person meant that "I guess this is the reason why I have not seen an EB...They have all been changed to Gamestops" not that "Because I didn't go to EB, they changed it to gamestops, to make sure I would go"....

I always went to Gamestop and never EB games. I just prefered gamestop when one day I traded in a bunch of games at EB and they offered 30 bucks, went to gamestop and for the same pile offered 60. Since then I was like "Pfft, forget EB games"

I wonder how this will affect Canada as all of them are EB and not GameStops.

We DO have Gamestops though, as I said...just not nearly as common (Gamestop only, relatively speaking, recently acquired EB and started appearing in Canada)...

I hope they know whats best for them, and keep out of it...Most canadian gamers are familiar with, and comfortable with EB, not Gamestop...

What a really big chain. From EB Games, then to Rhino Games, than to GameStop.

Anyways, I want to bid EB Games farewell. Goodbye!

What the...Meh, I do like the name EB Games moreso than GameStop, but I never bought my '90s games from them in the first place. That honor belonged to Toys 'R' Us xD

It's not that major of a deal. I used to work at a Gamestop that also had EB games in the area. All they're doing is switching the signs. Everything else has been integrated a long time ago. The only real reason for the sign change is to get the point across that they're the same place. Tons of people think there's actually difference between the stores. The only real difference is the people working in them and how capable they are at their job. As for Canada, who knows? Gamestop is a Texas based company so they may have a different strategy for non-domestic stores.

I think Gamestop should have been bought by EB Games. Overall i had better selection at EB Games than GameStop.
