GameTwat interview with Jack Thompson

Silver Mirror | September 29, 2007 | News | Playstation 3 Wii Misc
Jack Thompson seems to be getting more and annoying. Apparently he offered to do a interview for Gametwat after hearing they were being butchered online about a previous article. Maybe he thought he could make a friend? Unfortunately he does nothing more than spit out line after line of immature bullshit, using any excuse to insult practically everyone, including the very interviewers themselves!

P.S. read the comments at the bottom of the source, as they point out a lot of stuff you don't notice.
Can you sum up nice and succinctly what your problem with Video Games has been over the years?

Surely, and glad you asked, because most folks state what my position is and harpoon me for their fictions. I only oppose the sale of mature and adult games to kids at ages below the game rating. That’s it.

In this country, Grand Theft Auto games have been sold to kids as young as ten. My son, who did a sting with me, proved it, as has the US Federal Trade Commission over and over and over again. The problem with this is that the age rating is clearly an admission by the industry that an adult game is potentially harmful to, let’s say, a 12-year-old. And indeed they are, as the American Psychological Association has found that hyper-violent, “Mature-rated” games played by teen boys, young teens, leads to increased aggression. Brain scan studies at Harvard literally prove, visually, why this is true. The games are processed in a different part of the brain in kids, and it is the part that leads to copycatting. Take a look at the following Allstate Insurance ad recently run in major American newspapers. It gets at the same thing.

Game brain processing in teens does not connect to the frontal lobes. It’s a bit complicated, but every parent knows that kids copycat what they see and practice.

What of the accusation that the American Psychological Association actually doesn’t say that whatsoever, that you’re simply twisting their words? That what the APA actually says is that there’s no causal link between games and violence?

That’s absolutely false. Go read the report. It doesn’t say there is a correlation. It says there is causation. One of the psychologists on the APA panel who issued that report is one of our experts in the Alabama case. He confirms that the APA found causation.

The head of the panel, interviewed even by the head e-tard at GP, confirmed its causation, not mere correlation that they found between increased aggression and gameplay. I have no earthly idea where you got the notion that the APA said otherwise. Please read the report rather than what gamers say the report says. Here is what it says, at http://www.apa.org/releases/violentvideoC05.html

What are your thoughts of the people who comment on GamePolitics?

They’re people who have no idea what is really going on in the world. They care almost nothing about anything other than themselves and their petty concerns. They do not put the good of others ahead of their own narrow interests, because they are all about what they want to do, not what should be done for others.
GP really ought to stand for Godless Pissants.

Regardless about what has come out about Cho after the fact, you were on TV telling people it was ‘games what done it’ before his name was known, weren’t you? How can you justify those actions? That you were, essentially, guessing.

You know, you have a bad habit, which I am going to educate you out of, in assuming that what you have read I have said is really what I have said.

I said, on the Fox News Channel, that many of the prior school shootings were linked to games, like the worst one prior to V-Tech, in Erfurt, Germany, by a Counter-Strike nut. That is what I said. I also said that we don’t know who the shooter is and what he was into. Now, check the freaking tape...

"My son who did a sting with me." Bitch thinks he's some kind of SWAT member. Come to terms with your position Jack, you're a *bleep*ing lawyer. Besides, using your own son? Pathetic. I bet that kid has a lot of friends, his best friend is his douchebag dad.

Well in the UK if a game is rated 12, 15, or 18, the shop isn't allowed to sell it to a person under that age... Seems logical to me?

That's the most logical game rating system I have ever heard. Seriously.

The main reason Gametwat interviewed Thompson is probably because both they and Thompson have a common hatred for GamePolitics, as you can see in some of Gametwat's articles and how Thompson called someone at GamePolitics an "e-tard" in the article.

    Regardless, Thompson's still a twat.

Jack Thompson sounded reasonable, of course, he was still just saying HIS side of the story...

    Article Comment:

“…the American Psychological Association has found that hyper-violent, “Mature-rated” games played by teen boys, young teens, leads to increased aggression.”

It’s nice to see Thompson finally representing the report in a mostly accurate manner but that doesn’t change the fact that what he ends up quoting and linking to isn’t the APA’s Violence in Video Games Resolution! It’s a presentation of two researchers from Saint Leo University.

    Here’s the actual resolution: http://www.apa.org/releases/resolutiononvideoviolence.pdf

    Also:

-Ratings are not an admission of harm
-The brain studies he’s citing aren’t from Harvard and don’t say what he says they do
-GP doesn’t make money off of Thompson; there are no ads
-ECA isn’t an industry group it’s a consumer group (hence the name)
-The FBI/Secret Service findings do not single out video games (they’re grouped with “Fascination with Violence-Filled Entertainment,” one of over two dozen personality traits of one who could be a threat
-Washington Post reported (and later retracted) that Cho played Counter-Strike in high school, not that he was a CS nut
-Eh, I could go on, and on, and on…

Lol yeah I noticed that too. Looks like he didn't brush his teeth.

Anyways, can't he just leave us alone? I'd slap him in the face if I could!

If he had just stopped at the first paragraph, it would have been a good interview. I don't care if he wants to ban mature games to minors. That doesn't bother me. But the way he depicts gamers as mindless violence mongers causes the problem...

Quite simply, it should be this.

E for Everyone: obviously, anyone can play it, let alone purchase it.

E+10 for ages 10 and up: for everyone above the age of ten. Also simple.

T for Teen: anybody who is 13 years old or higher should be able to purchase it without parental supervision.

M for Mature: should always be purchased with parental supervision unless you are above the age of 17; your parents should determine if you are mature enough to handle playing this sort of game.

A for Adult: anyone below the age of 18 is restricted completely from buying this game. Any sensible parent would not give their child this game.
