Right now both the PS3 and 360 versions of Assassin's Creed are having a bit of trouble. The PS3 version is having trouble dealing with the amount of memory the OS takes up versus the lower memory OS in the 360. The 360 version however is having trouble with disc space, in that a DVD9 isn't sufficient enough to hold Assassin's Creed.

It has been discussed before, multiple disc solutions are not always plausible for different types of games, for a game like Assassin's Creed where you're going for full open-endedness and freedom disc size can be a problem and put a limit on that freedom.

Sony is actively working on lowering the footprint of the OS in the PS3 and have already made significant improvements since Firmware 1.81 so hopefully with even more firmware updates Sony can bring the footprint down even further.

Assassin's Creed looks like it might be a game that sets a standard for the future of the console wars.

Ubisoft Montreal, had drafted in help from both Microsoft and Sony to make sure the game has “the same quality on both systems“.

“The PS3 version is as good as the 360 version. We’ve been showing the PS3 version at E3 this year, but we’ve done a lot of events and it’s just easier for us and for people from the press to have a 360. But the versions are the same, basically,” he said.

“Both have their own challenges. Right now we have a big challenge on the 360 to make it fit on a DVD, to put five languages, to put all the data on eight gigs. On the Blu-ray side we’re really good, but then the memory is quite different. How we handle memory is really different between the two machines and we’re struggling right now on the PS3. But we have people who are really dedicated and we’re having help from Microsoft on one side and Sony on the other side to have the same quality on both systems. It really depends on the week basically as to who’s best.”

Set the standard of future of console games...The console wars bit doesn't apply much, as both consoles are having probs with it, not just one...

On the 360 side, they COULD remove some languages from certain regions where only a smaller minority actually uses it...For example, in North America, English, and French, are about all you need...Maybe Japanese, for Kicks, or Spanish as a third option, but most of North America knows either English or French as at least one of their languages...

They already do it that way, if you buy a Japanese 360 game there is no English option. With the PS3 and Blu-Ray they have every nationality on the disc because of the space. That's one of the reasons the PS3 can play any region PS3 game.

This will help set the standard for the console wars, what don't you get about that? Of course it affects the games but it has more to do with the consoles themselves. This isn't a game limitation it's a console limitation, on both accounts.

I get that each console will have to learn to deal with their probs to gain an advantage (or not nullify any advantages they have)...

But both consoles are having problems with development, not just one.

Personally, I think the PS3 version will come ahead, all they have to do is a solid firmware update to rectify the problem...aside from compressing data, or removing some extra data (extra language tracks for example), they can't do much...That is a serious limitation, as you can't magically make the disks have more space on them...Sure, you can use multiple disks, but in games like this (sandbox/open environment games), that doesn't work well...

I said that in the article I posted, both console are having problems, not just one, so where do you keep getting that from?

Because you said it would "Set the standard for the future of the console wars"...

Granted, in the end, one console is going to come ahead, and I think that will be the PS3, but this is more about how good the game is, it requires so much in the way of resources (disk space and processing power), it is more like it is setting the standard for games, rather than consoles...

Well, if this game is actually as good as people hope (which is doubtful, but I'm sure it will be worth a very high rating)...

And what I'm saying is that as time goes on games are only going to get more and more complex and interesting like Assassins Creed and if this proves to be true which version comes out on top this time could set the tone for the console wars.

At some point, Microsoft will wise up and start using Dual-layered discs. Throws just about everything out the window with that.

Uhhhhhhhh, a DVD9 is a dual layer DVD5(really 4.5) genius. Every single DVD9 is dual layer because in a DVD each layer has 4.5GBs of space.

Wouldn't take much to make it quad-layered. If they can make a quad-layered Blu-ray disc, they could do the same for this format as well.

Not that out of the question is it?

Yes it is actually, because a grand total of zero people in the industry want a worthless 4 layered 18GB DVD. That would mean new hardware. The 360 in it's current state could not read a 4 layered DVD.

Do us all a favor and stop trying?

    I hope this doesn't cause a delay.

I also think they should remove some minor features from the 360 if they continue to have problems with it like languages and etc... Just some minor stuff.

Right now it probably doesn't have any of the other languages besides English.

Actually, it is suggesting that they are TRYING to cram 5 languages on the disk...

They will probably eliminate some of the languages for each region though...They won't have much choice, unless they want to compress the game further (more load times, and lower quality graphics and audio)...

Why would they have 5 languages, kinda useless, I always play on English even if there si a Swedish option.

They're saying they're having trouble fitting the actual game on the disc.

Hmmm, well that seems to suggest they want to fit all the language data on the 360 version too >_>

No it doesn't Tallteen... If anything it is suggesting that even with compression Assassins Creed is still too big for DVD9 which is hardly a revelation on the Xbox 360 console, lots of games are pushing that disc format to the limits, whether or not they have 5 languages or only 1 language on the disc.

Now the article does state that both consoles have issues but from where i am standing, the PS3's issue is a relatively quick fix, yes they have to lower the memory usage of the OS but that is possible, Microsoft can't get another disc format, they can't use another disc for a game like this, so yes they both have problems but the PS3's issue is a short term thing, the 360's issue will continue to crop up for the next 3 years or more.
