Microsoft might be headed toward a virtual world

Final Blade | October 13, 2007 | News | XBOX 360 Company Misc
MS is looking into Virtual world. And they could launch its own entry of "Second life" or “Ultima Online” within a year, a top Microsoft executive said. Which would start on the PC first than slowly move to Xbox and Mobile phones.

Interesting move, i wonder what made them to take this route.
Microsoft Corp. has been exploring the business of virtual worlds and social networking for months, and could launch its own entry into the realm of “Second Life” or “Ultima Online” within a year, a top Microsoft executive said.

“By next year, you’ll probably know more about why I’m up here,” Daniel Schiappa, general manager of strategy for Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division told attendees at a virtual worlds conference in San Diego.

In an interview later, Schiappa expounded a little. He hinted that Microsoft is considering launching some sort of virtual world offering that would span across its gaming, PC and mobile device offerings. Most likely, any foray by Microsoft into the world of avatars or social networking would begin with PCs, then move across its Xbox gaming business and finally into its mobile phone business, Schiappa said.

If anyone actually complains about this, then I'll just laugh. Home sounds no more impressive than Second Life.

The purposes of Home and Second Life are so different from each other it's ridiculous.

Home is simply a bridge between the other functions of the PS3. Second Life is a game where the whole purpose is to lose yourself in a fake world where you can get away with all the stuff you can't in real life.

Everyone that keeps comparing Home and Second Life clearly don't have a clue about either. I've never played Second Life but I've looked into it, not my type of game.

Next person that compares SL to Home should be slapped. I played SL and it's essentially a user created World where it's "simulating" real life. Home is a virtual Community based around Sony/PS merchandise.

I'm surprised Microsoft didn't come out with this much sooner.

Again, not much difference. Home is, essentially, a worthless marketing ploy. And calling Home a "community" doesn't change anything. You're still in a virtual WORLD.

A worthless marketing ploy? It's not even a marketing ploy, what kind of marketing ploy would you call it?

Tenken, I thought you were smarter than that in all honesty.

    This sounds really good.
I've always wanted more virtual reality games after playing .Hack
Even if this won't feature combat, it should be interesing as a community. What's next, Neoseeker: MMORPG?

Imagine living the life online... you could do anything...

Everyone now think... (ANYTHING) ... you could make love to a famous moviestar or go to a Rock Concert and maybe it won't cost anything! =D

Some people might like it, but it's just not for me. If I want a life, I'll just use mine...
