Sony: No Backwards Compatibility Will Make You Buy More PS3 Games!

ITANI | October 18, 2007 | News | Playstation 3
As everyone now knows, Sony has discontinued backwards compatibility on Playstation 2 games in the U.K and the U.S. So you won't be seeing any future updates regarding what PS2 games are now compatible with your PS3. Also Sony has said that with them taking away backwards compatibility, this will allow people to purchase more PS3 games. Seems like Sony has forgotten about the past and is focussing about the present and future. Plus if you still own your PS2 console then BC shouldn't be an issue for you.
Sony's own research apparently showed that compatibility with PlayStation 2 games isn't likely to be missed by customers, who should already own the older system.

"Seems like Sony has forgotten about the past and is focussing about the present and future."

Which actually isn't necessarily a bad thing at all. I don't agree with their decision to discontinue BC but if they can start focusing more on better PS3 games and the future then it's not going to be a very big deal anyways that you can no longer play PS1 or PS2 games on your PS3.

I mean I love having BC ability on my PS3 but it's not like I use it regularly.

Cannot fault their logic, as alot of PS3 owners i am not happy that BC is gone in future models but also at the end of the day, i have only played one PS2 game on my PS3 and i sold that a few months ago.

Haven't even played any PS2 games on my Playstation 3. I don't really mind it being taken out as I still have my PS2.

Exactly. I understand from their point of view. I think most people bought their PS3's for either the console itself or a Blu Ray player.

I fault their logic. Sony could easily have manipulated the results of their research to get the desired result. Its very easy to manipulate the wording of questions to get the results you want

BC was one of the main reasons I wanted a PS3 in the first place. But since its being discontinued, well it's gonna take a lot to convince me to still invest in a PS3.

honetly...why is BC so important? I haven't even played any of my old PS2 games since I got a Ps3. I understand nostalgia purposes for people, but i don't know, if I wanted to play Ps2 and Ps1 games, I wouldn't have bought a PS3

I haven't played a previous game on the PS3 yet. I still have the PS2 sitting right beside it. I guess I could use it for upscaling, but I just don't really see it mattering that much.

This has to be the most Apple-tastic business model I have seen, other than Apple itself. "If we take away your PS2 playability, you have to choose from our more current, lackluster library." Either way, since when did Sony drop support altogether? I thought it was just the 40GB PS3? Does this mean no more PSOne game downloads anymore either? They were supposed to have thousands of titles up by now..

I'm a hundred percent behind you there. I have not played one PS2 or PS1 game on my PS3. You can only play a game for so long before you just get sick of it. By the time I got my PS2 I'd played through all my games at least 10 times and was glad to exchange them for great new games like Resistance and Oblivion

I've beaten Oblivion a lot. And Resistance seems to be sorta a love hate thing. I still play GTA, and Kingdom Hearts on my PS2. Not to mention I get random urges to play MGS 3 all the time. It just seems stupid to have it and then quit. If they just decide to not attempt it thats one thing but to do it then discontinue is quite another for me at least.

They might decide to "resume" it once PS2 is out of the scene in an attempt to increase sales even more.

I find it pointless; they're just forcing people into a corner, where the only way out is to buy PS3 games.

Not really, the console's been out for an entire year, so you can't really say "forcing"..they're cutting their costs, while everyone was complaining about the price cost that's what you're gonna have to stay with...if you don't like it, keep your PS2.

Some people like to go back and play older games. You get bored with the newer ones, and maybe you just have an urge to play a game you used to love.
