Tommo Inc., in partnership with SNK Playmore is going to be releasing the NeoGeo X Gold on December 6th, 2012, at a price of $200 dollars. We have to wonder why a system that is a hair over 20 years old is trying to make a comeback. Is it the games that make a console great, or the console itself?
The NEOGEO X GOLD entertainment system comes with the NEOGEO X Station, the NEOGEO X Handheld, which will contain 20 pre-loaded NEOGEO classic titles, and the NEOGEO X Joystick. The NEOGEO X Handheld device works with the NEOGEO X Joystick and NEOGEO X Station to charge the handheld device and transfer the action directly to a television set or monitor, via HDMI or A/V out.
Well, great, and if you’re a truly hardcore retro-gamer, perhaps this is right up your alley, but I just don’t see what kind of niche this is going to fill. You already have SNK titles out on the PlayStation Network and XBox Live Arcade, Atlus is releasing a new King of Fighters game, and let’s face it, the days where this was even relevant (going to an arcade putting your memory stick in and then going home to finish the game on your NeoGeo) are sadly, gone. Gamers have to search far and wide for an arcade these days, let alone one that might have NeoGeo system in it. Let’s also not forget about the advent of the emulator, in which I can play any one of these games right now on my computer.
