Piracy has been large problem in the gaming industry or actually in the whole entertainment industry. Where you can download or purchase games for a small price compared to the original game. Currently most next generation consoles and recent handhelds have fell victim to piracy, that's including the PSP, Wii, Xbox 360 & DS. While the PS3 is still retaliating and is the only console not to fall to piracy as of yet or it won't anytime soon. The following reasons explain why the PS3 has not fallen to piracy.

High Price Point

The high price point leaves gamers thinking twice about modding their PS3 as it's price point is still high. So if anything happens to the console in the modding process the owner would have thrown away a lump of cash for nothing.

Region-free games

Modding has been mostly common to games being only released in Japan and not any other territory. Take for instance Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix. This game is a prime example to why the PS2 is modded, because many hardcore fans do not appreciate being left out and are forced to mod their console. With the PS3 you do not encounter this problem as Sony were reasonable enough to make the PS3 games region free.

Blu-Ray

The size of each game is huge and most of the pirating happens on the Internet. Not many people would want to upload on torrent sites ISO files at 20Gb and more. Imagine the time period it would take to download that very file? Even though you go through this stage and be patient enough to wait for the download to complete, do you have a Blu-Ray writer? That's another problem, they are really expensive to purchase and so there goes that idea down the drain.

Hardware complexity

Each firmware update released for the Playstation 3 completely erases the previous firmware, so if any exploits are found within that firmware can be erased with one easy step and so exploits won't last long.

So as you can see, those are the main reasons why the PS3 hasn't fell victim to piracy, but as the price of hardware decreases the more vulnerable the console will become. The real question is how much longer can the PS3 hold out for?

In Asia’s gaming culture, piracy has been common place for every major game console since the NES. In the mid 90’s a device called the UFO, allowed ROM games stored on floppy disks to be played on the SNES via a disk-drive like device that sat on top of the SNES. The 32-bit era saw the rise of mod-chips and insane swap-tricks to get past CD region lockouts.

Personally I think the fact that the games use Blu-ray discs, is the major reason. The article fails to mention the fact that very few people even have BD-drives on their computers, let a lone BD-writers (which is most likely an even bigger rareity).

The article is surprisingly written from a fairly neutral viewpoint. Interesting read.

It does, but those are still fair points.

Good, I've never used pirated games, and no one should.

    Blu Ray ftw.

I completely agree. Piracy is unfair to the developers of the games.

I can see the lack of BD-drives being the primary reason. Modding should be safe if you can reset the system to factory specs.

People have no problem downloading 20BG from torrents, well aside from having to wait. I can't see that being much of a factor at all

It should be interesting to see how this trend carries now that AACS and BD+ are now defeated. I don't recall what securities were enabled on the game discs.

Yeah again, it is mostly the lack of Blu-Ray writers and the large file sizes that are the cause...As well as the region free business, I know of at least one person that modded one of their systems just to play games from Japan...

Also, in the future, there is going to be a much improved Internet2 connection thing (I THINK that is what it is called, for some reason), it has download speeds that are like 10 - 100x or more, I can't remember exactly, but it said that you could download a 1GB file (or larger) in a couple of seconds...Downloading a whole Blu-Ray movie in short order...

Once THAT comes out (available to the general public), file size will be a non-issue...

One of the other things to consider in many areas is that the "silver" scene isn't nearly as big in the market, If there was a case where it was so, then there would be another market to worry about since people would be paying a few bucks for pressed copies of the game.

Fortunately for SCEA this isn't the case right now.

I rarely see pirated games, and even more rarely, consoles.

The XBOX (Original) was easy to mod, and pretty much gave lessons to all modders for the future. The PS3 avoids this mainly with the fact that Blu-Ray is near impossible to reproduce. A friend of mine is working on modding his BR player into his PS2. I found that it's quite easy to do, avoiding the interference of the high-priced PS3.

Seems like an environment thing for the most part, I see quite a few people using modded DS carts, modded Wii systems and 360's. Simply because of how simple it is to use the system once the mod is completed, it's not like back in the day with ROM flashing hoping for a miracle to have it working.

the ONLY reason is the lack of blu-ray drives.

Believe me, every-day-pirates don't give a damn about downloading gigantic files. most of these guys have immense amounts of storage space at their disposal. it's not the 20GB disc images.

as soon as they make re-writable blu ray discs/drives cheap/easily accessible, the PS3 will be no different from every console in terms of piracy.

Wow more great news for PS3, But i don't think the piracy will happen to the PS3, i mean most people have no clue about the PS3 and how it works. Even if the price does come down you have to think that will be the deciding factor. But BD are another big factor as well. Im glad the PS3 is region free that rocks.

i'm glad that this hasn't happenned, and it's a great selling prospect (if you look at it that way) and i think that it is mainly because of the lack in blu ray rewritable drives
