With more than their fare share of successful games under their belt you might think that Harmonix could possibly be already thinking about Guitar Hero 4. However, repetitiveness can get quite tedious. Harmonix is planning on a new game that will not be guitar based. According to the description for one of the presentations from Harmonix the Game Developers Conference 08' the new title will be algorithmically generated rather than having a composer / game designer create them. The game will also lack the needed peripherals such as Guitar Hero's guitar. It looks like we'll have to wait for GDC 08' to find out more on what Harmonix has in mind.

Harmonix has established a successful series of “beatmatch” games, where players tap buttons or strum on plastic guitars to “match” the musical “beats” of a series of pre-recorded songs. Their new title faced unique challenges: beats would not be authored by tech-savvy musicians, but would instead be algorithmically generated, and the game would lack the dedicated peripherals that were critical to the success of the Guitar Hero series. This lecture presents a case study of adapting a proven design to new set of constraints.
