The next-gen format war has been iffy since the start between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD but soon the winner could be decided if Blu-Ray continues it's sales. Currently Blu-Ray has consistently sold better than HD-DVD since the outset with a figure of 2:1. However a major factor to why HD-DVD was even still in the game was because of how much cheaper the HD-DVD players were than the Blu-Ray players. This holiday season that could all change and Blu-Ray might see a huge boost in sales.
With the recently announced 40gb PS3 with Blu-Ray playback at $399. Sony is also expecting it's stand alone Blu-Ray players to drop at least 20 percent bringing them down into the $400 dollar range as well.
...the word from Sony Electronics president Stan Glasgow at the end of week that saw widespread pricedrops for Toshiba's entry-level 1080i HD DVD players.
Glasgow's comments came during a twice-a-year media roundtable in New York, where according to published reports, the exec said that it expected prices for its standalone players to drop by 20 percent or more this holiday to around $399.

Some people just want to be able to pop in a Blu-Ray movie and not have to navigate through an XMB just to start it.
This articles intention wasn't to say, "hey people at gamegrep, now you can buy a much cheaper standalone blu-ray player." The intention was "hey people of gamegrep that want Blu-Ray to succeed and win, well stand alone players are going to come down in price so things are looking up."
What i meant there was Yes not everyone wants a PS3 but maybe one day they would like to play games.
Its still cheaper to get a PS3 which was the main point. Since you haven't fixed the article which stats Playstation 3 People will take it as such. IMO you kinda screwed up on your article.
EDIT: You don't have to add PS3 if they mention it once, if it isn't for the thing entirely, being a reporter especially sites like this you need to be very specific to the article other wise people may misinterpret your news and then you lose credibility, you could have added entertainment along side PS3 to cover your tracks. Thats my whole point.
Forget the enthusiast approach on quality and options, if you're talking about the uninformed masses, prices control their choice, not jargon they do not comprehend.
The holiday season should be interesting given this news. The most I've seen slated from Sony right now is the 80GB packing Motorstorm for $499 at Sears.
No one will buy a Blu-Ray player now, for sure, they''ll just die now.
1. because the ps3 does not have a display on the unit
2. the controller can be a pain to use because nothing is labeled(stop, play, FF, next chap.) you also cannot program it into a universal remote.
Press start and you will see the start play etc, so your point are moot. Also get a remote, if not there is nothing wrong with the controller, stop being picky.
and i dont want to have to bring up a MENU on screen when watching a movie just to remember how to pause the damn thing (i know its start but not everyone will) and for anyone with a home theater they know how annoying it is to have 3 controllers as it is why the hell would they want a fouth...thats why i brought up the universal remote.....you think im being picky...ive got something for you to pick......MY ASS!!
WANT: PS3, blu-ray player, lcd tv, universal remote, display, etc
...you're right, they fall under wnats.....my bad.....
