In all technicality, the PS3 isn't gaining ground in Japan, because the Wii did sell more. The gap per units sold weekly just decreased.
Actually it is, while Nintendo Wii has dropped in sales that proves that not everyone is selling out for Wii alone, and PS3 getting 47,183 is actually alot considering 2 to 3 months ago it was only selling 18,000 to 25,000 max per month, so yes it is gaining ground. Don't let Nintendo sales fool you. With the release of some good games October and now there more good looking games this month, i suspect the PS3 will get bigger sales, not only from games but from the new 40GB model that is $399 and the $499 80GB version. So i say PS3 is going to be looking good this month and next.
How well the PS3 does will do so irregardless of the Wii. The bump in PS3 sales are because of the recent Japanese price drop. No doubt, sales will also increase with the white 40GB. Just don't forget that Super Mario Galaxy has come out this past week, and also Wii Fit later this year.
Also thats not true a product doesn't have to outsell the other product to gain ground. Where did you read that crap. Seriously you have no clue what your talking about.
It's also intuition. How can someone gain ground on any given date if they haven't sold more than the rival product? If you're constantly getting outsold, how are you gaining ground? If we were talking about possibilities, then yes, the PS3 is gaining ground. Since we are talking about hard numbers, how do you gain ground when you are clearly getting outsold by a competitor?
Again, the gap per week/month is the one that is shrinking, not the LTD lead. By all technicalities, the lead for the Wii in pure numbers is still widening, albeit at a shrinking pace. The article is incorrect in this aspect.
However, I predict that the Wii will still outsell the PS3 in Japan in November, which means its lead increases.
Also what this article was talking about like i stated is the gap per month not total world wide sales.
Thats what this means, and thats what im saying.
This gives off the impression that the LTD lead actually shrunk, where the numbers say otherwise. This is where the article is inaccurate. The article does not specify that this is referring to the monthly sales that you specify. The week by week number gap (and thus, month by month) are decreasing, but the Wii is still increasing its lead over the PS3.
There are two people in a race. Person one is leading by 10 seconds and he gained 2 seconds per lap for five laps. Now person two picks up the pace and only loses 1 second on the sixth lap making person one ahead by 11 seconds. He didn't gain any ground, he just lost less than the previous laps.
Buy the console and shut up. Nobody cares about the sales.
Like, your not gonna buy a Wii because it has more copies sold. That's completly bullshit.
I'll buy a PS3 (if i had the money) even if sales are bad for it!
Not weekly.
In other words, it's still quite some time until the PS3 is really "catching up" to anything.
EDIT: Wow, I really don't like GameGrep... To continue:
No, you aren't understanding at all. The gap in systems sold does continue to widen, but the pace at which it is doing so is decreasing by the week. So, instead of Nintendo outselling the PS3 by 100,000 units, they're only outselling them by 60,000 this month (example). Therefore, they are still outselling the PS3 and the gap between the two is increasing, but instead of increasing at 100,000 units/month, it's only 60,000. Are Akira and I the only ones that understand this? Please somebody else come in and tell me this makes sense.
This is the point of the article- plain and simple.
"The PS3 is doing a little better, but is still far behind the Wii in Japan. If the progress continues for the PS3, maybe it will cut into the Wii's lead eventually."
For a year now the Wii's installbed base has easily humbled that of the PS3 in Japan. The PS3 can't gain ground on the Wii unless it outsells it. Its that easy to understand. -Sigh-
As for my take... When Sony brings back rumble, cuts the PS3 price a few more times, releases some great exclusives, and quits ignoring what gamers wants- then it will be able to cut into the Wii's lead.
On an off note- The sad truth is, Sony is more focused on getting the blu-ray format to take off than pleasing gamers. The company wants to spin out enough ads and propaganda that people walk into Target or Gamestop and think- "Wow! What a deal! I'm buying a cheap blu-ray player... And it plays great looking games!" In other words, they try not to market it as an 'expensive game console', instead they want people to see it as an 'inexpensive blu-ray player'. That shaky marketing is what's turning off so many Japanese gamers- in my opinion.
I personally would love to grab a PS3, but that price tag really worries me... Is it worth it? Not at the moment- maybe never, I dunno. Until it looks like it will be worth that much cash, I'll wait. Heh...
