PS3 gaining ground on the Wii in Japan.

Final Blade | November 04, 2007 | News | Playstation 3 Wii Gaming Tech/Hardware
It seems the PS3 is gaining some needed ground in Japan. Though a reporter stated that the Wii was outselling the PS3 by 2-1, this is by far the fourth consecutive month that the Wii sales dropped.
With Nintendo Wii selling 110,415 and the PS3 47,183 in October things are looking good for PS3. This seems like an incredible feat considering 4-5 months ago the Wii was outselling the PS3 by 6-1.
Way to go Sony, now the biggest challenge is yet to come, the Holiday season. Can Sony make some big time sales to reach 10 mill worldwide, lets sit back and watch.
TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co Ltd's Wii game console outsold Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 by 2-to-1 in Japan in October, a game magazine publisher said, but its lead over the PS3 shrank for the fourth consecutive month.

Nintendo sold 110,415 units of the Wii in the four weeks to October 28, compared with 47,183 units of the PS3, Enterbrain said on Friday.

The Wii, which features an innovative motion-sensing controller that allows gamers direct on-screen play by swinging it like a racket or sword, outsold the PS3 by more than 6-to-1 in Japan in June.

Taking a look at the October Media Create Numbers, there were no real games released for the Wii on October. We'll have to wait for when this week's Media Create numbers come out, as Super Mario Galaxy released on November 1st.

That hardly matters since they're selling out with or without these games.

Japan isn't selling out... Wiis are now readily available.

In all technicality, the PS3 isn't gaining ground in Japan, because the Wii did sell more. The gap per units sold weekly just decreased.

    @Akira_EX
Actually it is, while Nintendo Wii has dropped in sales that proves that not everyone is selling out for Wii alone, and PS3 getting 47,183 is actually alot considering 2 to 3 months ago it was only selling 18,000 to 25,000 max per month, so yes it is gaining ground. Don't let Nintendo sales fool you. With the release of some good games October and now there more good looking games this month, i suspect the PS3 will get bigger sales, not only from games but from the new 40GB model that is $399 and the $499 80GB version. So i say PS3 is going to be looking good this month and next.

A product only gains ground on another product if it outsells the other product. The gap between weekly sales is smaller, but there's still a gap. Thus, the Wii's lead is widening. Second derivatives there, buddy.

How well the PS3 does will do so irregardless of the Wii. The bump in PS3 sales are because of the recent Japanese price drop. No doubt, sales will also increase with the white 40GB. Just don't forget that Super Mario Galaxy has come out this past week, and also Wii Fit later this year.

Your missing the point its Monthly Sales not Weekly. And Like i said They are closing the gap, it proves that people are getting into PS3 more in Japan and since there is tons of games this month i could see the PS3 getting 65,000 at least in November.

Also thats not true a product doesn't have to outsell the other product to gain ground. Where did you read that crap. Seriously you have no clue what your talking about.

Japanese hardware numbers come out on a weekly basis. Monthly numbers are only just an addition of those weekly numbers.

It's also intuition. How can someone gain ground on any given date if they haven't sold more than the rival product? If you're constantly getting outsold, how are you gaining ground? If we were talking about possibilities, then yes, the PS3 is gaining ground. Since we are talking about hard numbers, how do you gain ground when you are clearly getting outsold by a competitor?

Again, the gap per week/month is the one that is shrinking, not the LTD lead. By all technicalities, the lead for the Wii in pure numbers is still widening, albeit at a shrinking pace. The article is incorrect in this aspect.

However, I predict that the Wii will still outsell the PS3 in Japan in November, which means its lead increases.

This article is about monthly not weekly. And since they talk about total number of sales per month this article isn't inaccurate. Please give me some proof that im wrong. As far as i can see this article is accurate.

Also what this article was talking about like i stated is the gap per month not total world wide sales.

You can derive monthly sales from the weekly sales.

But the PS3, which suffered a slow start after its launch a year ago due to its high price and scarcity of strong game titles, has been closing the gap with the Wii in recent months as Sony cut console prices and beefed up its software lineup.

The Wii's narrowing lead in Japan is a welcome sign for Sony as the electronics and entertainment conglomerate heads into the crucial holiday season.
This gives off the impression that the LTD lead actually shrunk, where the numbers say otherwise. This is where the article is inaccurate. The article does not specify that this is referring to the monthly sales that you specify. The week by week number gap (and thus, month by month) are decreasing, but the Wii is still increasing its lead over the PS3.

Akira is right when saying one can't gain ground when they are still being outsold. Here is an analogy for you.

There are two people in a race. Person one is leading by 10 seconds and he gained 2 seconds per lap for five laps. Now person two picks up the pace and only loses 1 second on the sixth lap making person one ahead by 11 seconds. He didn't gain any ground, he just lost less than the previous laps.

Who *bleep*ing cares if the PS3 is beating the Wii in Japan? Why does everyone care about sales anyway?

Buy the console and shut up. Nobody cares about the sales.

Like, your not gonna buy a Wii because it has more copies sold. That's completly bullshit.

Lots of people care about sales numbers. Many people work in the industry and/or have stock in these companies. Sales numbers are big factors.

Point being, the line doesn't make sense. "this is by far the fourth consecutive month.." Its either the fourth consecutive month or it isn't. Nothing can be by far the fourth consecutive anything.

It is a terribly misleading article because it confuses kids like finalblade into thinking that the PS3 is "catching up" to the Wii. That is false, and as Akira said the gap between the two systems is still widening, albeit at a smaller pace than in previous months.

In other words, it's still quite some time until the PS3 is really "catching up" to anything.

      iLLmatic | November 07, 2007
I know what you're saying, but it can't be widening, yet at a smaller pace at the same time. The gap between sales is still large, but the PS3 is definitely selling better than what it was, in comparison.

    Moonrise | November 07, 2007
Well, it can, and that's the point. Yes, it's selling better, but that's really the only thing you can take from the article. No matter how you cut it, the gap between PS3 and Wii sells continues to widen and it will be a while before that changes.

EDIT: Wow, I really don't like GameGrep... To continue:

No, you aren't understanding at all. The gap in systems sold does continue to widen, but the pace at which it is doing so is decreasing by the week. So, instead of Nintendo outselling the PS3 by 100,000 units, they're only outselling them by 60,000 this month (example). Therefore, they are still outselling the PS3 and the gap between the two is increasing, but instead of increasing at 100,000 units/month, it's only 60,000. Are Akira and I the only ones that understand this? Please somebody else come in and tell me this makes sense.

It continues to widen? You just said its widening at a smaller pace. Wouldn't that mean that the sales difference is not widening, but getting smaller?

My gosh... This is just... sad. Ha. How could so many people be confused by this article? No offense, but it isn't that difficult to understand. Akira, Moonrise, and Mr. Roboto have all stated it. How much more simple can the explanation get?
This is the point of the article- plain and simple.
"The PS3 is doing a little better, but is still far behind the Wii in Japan. If the progress continues for the PS3, maybe it will cut into the Wii's lead eventually."

For a year now the Wii's installbed base has easily humbled that of the PS3 in Japan. The PS3 can't gain ground on the Wii unless it outsells it. Its that easy to understand. -Sigh-

As for my take... When Sony brings back rumble, cuts the PS3 price a few more times, releases some great exclusives, and quits ignoring what gamers wants- then it will be able to cut into the Wii's lead.

On an off note- The sad truth is, Sony is more focused on getting the blu-ray format to take off than pleasing gamers. The company wants to spin out enough ads and propaganda that people walk into Target or Gamestop and think- "Wow! What a deal! I'm buying a cheap blu-ray player... And it plays great looking games!" In other words, they try not to market it as an 'expensive game console', instead they want people to see it as an 'inexpensive blu-ray player'. That shaky marketing is what's turning off so many Japanese gamers- in my opinion.

I personally would love to grab a PS3, but that price tag really worries me... Is it worth it? Not at the moment- maybe never, I dunno. Until it looks like it will be worth that much cash, I'll wait. Heh...

The PS3 has power, but the Wii has all those sales. If you want a fun console that the whole family can enjoy, then buy a Wii. If you want a console with cutting edge graphics, sound and memory, then buy a PS3. They both have good points. The sales are a matter of what people want.

The fact is though it doesn't how you cut it, more PS3 is getting sold and the Wii sales has dropped but if you look at the overall sales yes the wii is winning. I didn't mistake anything the article isn't misleading....it doesn't matter really now its over 6 days ago. Moonrise, akira and mr roboto give me a link to whats your saying cause in all honesty it makes no sense.
