Zelda: To Be Over-Saturated Like Mario?

Vermillion | November 04, 2007 | News | Wii Gamecube
Apparently, Nintendo is starting to abuse the Zelda franchise, and that's not going to be good. Let's compare Mario And Zelda for a second: Mario has more merchandise than Zelda and a bunch of titles. Zelda is below Mario when we talk about merchandise, but Zelda is starting to get all sort of weird product, like the new game: Link's Crossbow Training.

As a personal opinion, I honestly think the same. Nintendo will over-saturate Zelda soon, with many weird titles or other games that lacks the basic elements like Phantom Hourglass.
And that's also why I don't see us Nintendo gamers playing Super Hyrule Kart anytime soon, racing around on the backs of Gorons or hanging onto the talons of Rutos. Nintendo already has the Mario universe to fill all of these secondary titles - a universe that is arguably better known and more "family-friendly" than that of the Zelda series.

I'm going to enjoy Link's Crossbow Training as the mini-game it is. Its a smart tactic from Nintendo to bring in Zelda fans - and a conscious one to show the Zapper can be used to portray something other than gun-shooting. Super Paper Zelda is a long way off yet.

If Link's Crossbow Training were touted as a real separate game, and not as a pack-in for a peripheral, I'd be inclined to believe you.

However, that is to say, Phantom Hourglass lacks basic elements and is the result of the over-saturation of Zelda? That's just silly.

They should just spend like half a year making a new game as good as it can, instead of bringing out a new game every month, and not taking any time on it.

They usually spend three to four years on each Zelda game, doylie. Every once in a while, there may be a spin-off (like Link's Crossbow Training or Tingle's Rosy Rupee Land), but they are rare and generally serve a purpose, rather than simply used for a quick buck. Zelda is probably the best series to use with the Zapper since they can use a crossbow. They'll leave the cash-ins to Mario and the various developers that will develop them, and develop the real games in-house.

First of all, I think they're going to put as much work into the new game as they can. They won't "over-saturate" it. Maybe some titles but nothing in the main timeline.

With doylie's first statement, it's true for Mario.

They release tons of games and random things with Mario on them. I see very little, if none, of Mario OR Zelda's products, and if I ever see any, it's for Zelda.

You mean to tell me it isn't oversaturated yet?

Nah, man. We only see a new Zelda game every 4 years, while other series like Mario, GTA, and MGS have a new game every 1 or 2 years.

Are you kidding? Compared to Zelda, Metal Gear Solid and GTA are still relatively new franchises; there are many more Zelda titles than those two games. By the time GTA IV comes out, it will have been a 2 1/2 year period since San Andreas. The same goes for MGS 4.

Mario is more of a Party genre whereas Zelda is an RPG genre...

Zelda Party games would't sell very well and i'd be surprised if Nintendo make another Mario RPG!

How is mario more of a party genre? With the exception of mario party games...which is obvious.

They are both adventure games..granted Zelda has some rpg elements.

Mario is not an adventure game, it is the epitome of a Platform game.

kazooieman is right ... Many (if not, most) Mario games are "party games". Not only the obvious Mario Party, but there's also Mario Golf, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Basketball, Dance Dance revolution Mario Mix, etc.

Super Smash Brothers is no mere party game, it is as serious as Mortal Kombat at the very least. Further more, it is not a Mario game, why not call it a Kirby game, it is about as close.

Even if this were true, would there be anything wrong with it? No, there wouldn't. Spinoffs like Zelda Party and Zelda Sports would be awesome.
And Zelda is not a roleplaying game, FFS!

Zelda is a fantastic game, from personal experience, all games that nintendo release with either the mario or zelda title printed on them is a representation of quality and a group of dedicated programmers all building another in the long line of games, they have alot to live up to, but they have as far as i have played lived up to this in every title released.

Zelda truly is an amazing game, but with the release of Link's Crossbow Training, I'm truly wondering where Nintendo is getting there ideas from. I don't see how this is going to aid the series in any form, but nontheless it is an interesting idea.

It is true that Mario is somewhat turning into a " party game " series, and it's rather annoying. I personally prefer the old Mario N64 and the like, and these " party games " are ruining the old running Mario series.
