New CoD and Guitar Hero coming 'on an annual basis'

Linkin Park Fan | December 03, 2007 | News | PC Playstation 3 Misc
Right from the horses mouth. Activision and Vivendi has announced that it will be releasing Call Of Duty, Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk games on an annual basis, or as close as they can to an annual basis. Seeing as these games have sold millions of copies it makes sense to try and put new ones out as often as they can.
Activision and Vivendi, has revealed that it will be making new games in franchises like Call of Duty and Guitar Hero "on an annual basis".

It's a move that sounds a lot like rival publishing behemoth EA's strategy of pumping out new versions of its core titles every year. EA has been criticised by some gamers for focusing on this model of publishing over high quality new games.

Speaking in a conference call today, Robert Kotick, chairman and CEO of Activision, said: "You can expect virtually every one of those properties (its 10 multi-million unit-selling franchises) will be exploited on an annual or close to annual basis."

So we can expect a new Call of Duty, Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk's game at least close to every year from now on.

When the deal was announced, Activision and Blizzard said they will form "the world's most profitable games business" in a deal worth $18.8bn (£9.15bn).

We've already has a look at the deal and cast our critical eye over whether it will have any effect on the games we all love from both companies, including CoD, Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk's from Activision and Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo from Blizzard.

Earlier today we were the first to bring you the news that Call of Duty 5 and Guitar Hero 4 are already in the pipeline, the information tucked away in a fact sheet on the deal.

Who let EA in on this deal?
I hope they know what they are doing with CoD...I don't mind waiting every other year for another CoD if it means it'll be as epic as CoD4 and others.

Wasn't GH released every year 'till now?

More watered down, rinsed & re-rinsed material. Just what the game industry needs.

Guitar Hero, I'm fine with. But is this necessary for Call of Duty and Tony Hawk? CoD has grown stale and 4 was the first to change the formula to some extent. Are they planning to milk that formula until it grows stale, too? Tony Hawk also needs to change, especially now with Skate beating Tony Hawk in almost every way imaginable. This sounds like a poor choice, honestly. I don't think they will be able to release a new CoD or TH every year without sacrificing quality...

This is not good, rushed out low quality games are what are gonna kill these great franchises.

It all depends on when it will get released. I bet most will get delayed and will have good quality. They can try to say we will release on every year but the fact remains most games don't follow their original date, so im not worried.

Every James Bond game I've ever played has sucked hard. And this hardly sounds like good news. Guitar Hero is fine since it doesn't need much development time. But the others will probably be rushed and ruin two great franchises

How long did it take to make CoD4? Years? If the next CoD is another Treyarch project, they might as well forget about any kind of hype or support for the game.

Who knows? It was probably already in development before CoD3 was released, so about a year or so. CoD5 could possibly already be in its development stages.

Has no one realized that this has been happening so far? Every year since the 360 released there has been a new CoD,TH, and GH.

The guitar hero games are all the same anyways, just different songs. As for COD, I hope they don't just release another COD4 with better graphics and new levels, as much as I love the game I don't need to buy it again. They should learn something from EA and make good games instead of annual rubbish, but it looks like they are learning from EA by re-releasing the same rubbish every year with new features. I sure hope it's the former.

Deadman Rule's is right on the money with that. I didn't like CoD3 compared to is predecessors because it just felt like an updated CoD2.

I dunno why my post got deleted, but where did I say COD4 was rubbish? I was saying that when games are released on an annual basis they tend to be shit. I love COD4 (even have said in the pat that it's better than Halo or Gears) but would hate to see COD5 be a watered down version of COD4 with more useless features. EA does that kind of stuff with there games and it sucks.

Can't you comprehend a single post finalblade? Must everything be explained to you?

Tony Hawks to be released on a annual basis, well I uess all they have to do it focus on locations =/.

COD4 though will be something to wait for espically on the annual basis. Will be following that =D
