Square Enix calls Wii a toy and questions Sony's intentions.

Jeterocks | December 05, 2007 | News | Playstation 3 Wii
It seems that the boss at Square Enix really enjoys the 360 and doesn't look at the Wii with much praise. Also could this say something about the future of Square Enix's games? Seems that the boss favors the 360 over the Ps3 and Wii. Who knows, Multiple Disk Final Fantasy for the 360?
The boss over at Square Enix has come out and stated that the Wii is the exact opposite of the Xbox 360 and the PS3 because the Wii is bought as a toy, while the Xbox 360 is bought by people who like games.

He stated that the attachment rate for the Xbox 360 is far higher than that fo thr Wii. The attachment rate is the number of games people buy for their console.

He stated that people who buy the Xbox 360 really like games while people who buy the Wii are not buying it as a game machine, but instead are buying it as a toy.

In regards to the Sony PS3, he stated that he urges them to define their place in the gaming market with their console.

He stated "The Wii is the antithesis of the Xbox 360. It’s strictly for hardcore gamers. The attachment rate for the Xbox 360 is much higher than for the Wii. People who buy the 360 really like games... "

"I think the current trend is that most people aren’t buying the Wii as a game machine, but as a toy... It seems that Sony isn’t sure what it wants to do. Is it making high-end electronics or a game console for gamers? I want them to clearly define their console. "

...Square LIKES the american 360 and HATES the japanese Wii and PS3? Are they sure they weren't talking to some other company?

It is definitely Square Enix. Taken from another source I got this

    quote
Yoichi Wada, chief executive of Japanese RPG powerhouse Square Enix (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest), recently made some interesting comments to CNET Japan, as translated by Kotaku. Interestingly, Wada believes that most people aren't buying the Wii as a video game console per se.
it is definitely a strange thing for them to say.

They said nothing about disliking the PS3, all it said was that Sony have to make their place in the market, and as things are going at the moment, they can do that fairly easily since it is Christmas time, and by selling the right games now, they can cover the ground that the lost out on due to the X360 being released a year earlier.

The head of Square Enix, one of (if not THE) biggest Japanese third party game companies, bad mouths the PS3 & Wii, while praising the Xbox 360?

Crap, the apocalypse is coming any second now.

Everyone is always so quick to speak out on the Japanese/American relationship(s) just because they're following the crowd. I doubt many people who say things like "(insert Japanese company) praising an American company???" has ever actually been to Japan. Business is business and even a racist will hire you if they can make money off of you. Perhaps Square has really just been riding the front runner with their games: SNES, PlayStation, PS2, and although they are still hand in hand with the PS3, we see comments like this in the article above, along with FFXI on the 360.

Meh. Square Enix has always been blunt about these sorts of things. They've also stated that most PS3 developers are lazy and need to quit slacking off and bitching about the PS3 supposedly being complicated.

Actually the quote Jeterocks listed might be pretty much accurate, i mean how do we know if there really buying the Wii for the games but for stuff like Wii fit. Although i just think this was a misinterpret of what they actually said to be honest. But who knows though, Last time i check SE stated that they loved working with the PS3 and the cell processor and that was when they were talking about FF13 and FF13 versus not to long ago like a few days ago it was posted, so who knows what this means.

They didn't exactly badmouthed the PS3 per se the link stated

I think what he's trying to say is Sony isn't being specific if this system is a game machine or high end electronic machine, although i think from what we know according to Sony its both, although im just guessing here. But he also states that "The attachment rate for the Xbox 360 is much higher than for the Wii, and xbox owners really love games".

But nonetheless Its probably another jab at Nintendo or whatever, but still kinda harsh.

I want to know what the attach rate numbers for the two consoles actually are. Does anyone have a link?

Think about it. Comparing the number of games 360 owners have over both PS3 and Wii owners is like comparing apples and oranges.

    a) 360 has been out a full year longer. That means early adopters of the 360 have had twice as long to buy games, and therefore should have at least twice as many games, just from the time standpoint.

    b) 360 games are reaching there second and third generation, while both PS3 and Wii are just barely reaching second generation games. Developers understand the 360 now, and have had ample time to work on great products, while those same high quality productions are still in the works or coming out in the coming months for the other two systems. So, a 360 owner has more quality games to buy right now, also due to time. In this regard, SE is not helping at all, since most of their games for Wii and PS3 are still without solid release dates.

Don't you mean 360 games are reaching there second and third year, while PS3 and Wii are second year. Generation would imply its a new generation of systems and games. Though i could be wrong but i wasn't sure what you meant.

Its fairy obvious he's taking a shot at both systems to elevate the 360. Read between the lines. He's implying that the 360 is the only gaming system out there now because 'the Wii is a toy' and the PS3 'doesn't know what it is'- so to speak. Its interesting how so many publishers are willing to make public statements on their views on the consoles- yet still develop games for them. It strikes me as phony... But business is business.

I'd have to agree with a few statements made alreadt here. Square does always seem to run to the winning side- though the 360 isn't at the top, and nowhere near that in Japan. On that note, it seems pretty suicidal to put their cash on the slowest horse in Japan.

One other thing strikes me as funny... Less than a year ago, some reps from SE were doing the opposite of this. They were claiming that the 360 had no place in the Japanese market and therefore would be a risky platform to look at- the PS3 was a wonderful piece of technology and could achieve levels of gaming never before imagined- and that the Wii's immersive controls could recreate gaming for the next era.

    Go figure. Heh...

    THe wii is a toy.

He wants to PS3 to become what it can.

It's like Training an elite Marine, which costs losts of money, and is capable of many things but sits there and does almost nothing.

Sure, PS3 has a few good games but they aren't taking advantage of it's full power, or even half of it's power. Instead, they just made it able to compete with the 360. Why not go the extra mile? It isn't sony's fualt, it's the companies that don't want to over come the 360. Because xbox noobs (meaning just the noobs) will be getting upset "why is the PS3 better than my 360!"

so, in order to keep peace they just leave it...

MGS4, Kilzone II, and Tekken 6 will show how powerful the PS3 actually is, and that's what I can't wait for.

Interesting but then everyone is intitled to like what they do, and im sure they will produce products on the 360 in the future but never a chance in hell it will be Final Fantasy at the same time release for the PS3.

Nomura pretty much completely debunked the possibility of those 2 hitting the 360 (or even the PC), mainly due to the fact they're trying to use 100% of PS3's power and capabilities for FFXIII.

Even thats impossible to use all the PS3 power and capabilities would make a bad run for Sony. I mean maybe get it close to half way if that. But its exclusive nonetheless

Haha multiplatform FF13 not a chance, FF13 is using all the power of the PS3 which is YES more power than the 360 has to use so the game would not be on the 360 unless it was toned down which looking at the PS3 version's screens is looking better than anything on any platform... Just because Square Enix prefer's the 360 doesn't mean they will make FF for it, they know which platforms are right for which games its why you 360 guys got that shitty shooter heh...

Although the Xbox 360 and PS3 are more suited towards hardcore gamers, the Nintendo Wii is rather like a toy, much possibly because the ESRB ratings usually have a tendency to E, E (10+) or Teen games on Nintendo systems.

Squenix biased towards 360? Knew it .

But in all logic, I can't see why they wouldn't support the 360 and bash the PS3. The 360 has a much much larger userbase, so many more games, better quality games, better online, I could go on. The PS3 has a tiny library, a small userbase, lower quality games and a fledgling online service.

And the Wii is just as the price indicates.
