Reggie Hits Back: Wii Shortages & Serious Gaming

Q22 | December 06, 2007 | News | Wii
During an MSNBC interview, Reggie Fils-Aime commented on the Wii shortages and hit back at critics that claimed the shortages were part of an elaborate marketing ploy to generate more buzz, interest as well as boost business.

As well as this, he also hits back at claims that Nintendo is beginning to neglect serious gamers. He cites Super Mario Galaxy as proof and states it's near perfect scores in every major gaming publication as proof. He expands on this by mentioning that large numbers of people no longer view gaming as an entertainment medium and Nintendo must work hard to attract these people back as well as cater to current loyal fans.
Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo in the US, has hit back at claims that shortages of the Wii console may have been artificially created in order to generate marketing hype.

In an interview with MSNBC Fils-Aime stated: "In absolute terms, it is highly, highly unfortunate that consumers cannot find a Wii to purchase.

"And anyone who suggests that a shortage is good for business really doesn't understand business. We want the consumer to walk into any retail establishment and find the product. And that’s what we're working tirelessly to make happen."

----

And when asked whether Nintendo was still out to cater to hardcore gamers, Fils-Aime was quick to put forward the company's all-inclusive policy.

"The answer to those fans is Super Mario Galaxy, which on every major gaming publication is receiving near-perfect scores.

They was a plan to increase custom, to be honest if there was a shortage of something I wanted it would increase me wanting it, it would just piss me right of and I would end up not getting it.

So his response to core gamers is "Super Mario Galaxy" followed by "they're just a small percentage of the market"?

Wow, one game, followed by comments about how core gamers are only a small part of the market anyway. NICE GOING REGGIE!

And if I'm not into platform plumber gaming, then what?

He's basically admitting that Nintendo is just saying "*bleep* you" to the hardcore crowd.

P.S. I am a nintendo fan and own a wii before people ride me for this comment. But man Nintendo is sucking a lot lately with this new attitude they've developed. Are they really out to please gamers or just out to maximize profit? The new Sony.
