Down-to-Right Punch. That command input was made famous in the popular Street Fighter Series, some decade and a half ago (the name being Hadouken). Now it's back, and looking more impressive than ever with a new makeover. The characters will be put in the same 3D-ish style you see on Ryu (top right) but staying with it's roots as a 2D fighter.

More details will be released when EGM's Jan. 2008 issue hits store shelves. It's set for a late '08 release date for now.

Numbers are supposed to be impressive, right? Well, it's been 10 years, two hardware generations, and about 17,000 rumors since the last pure number Street Fighter came around. And today we have the first ever official details on Street Fighter IV.
We don't blame you if your eyes have already skipped down to the screenshot lower on the page (yes, that's from the game engine). Take your time. But we've got some information as well, so the rest of this is probably worth reading when you get a chance.

Though the screenshot doesn't answer this question outright, we can confirm that the game's graphics are polygonal but the gameplay is strictly 2D. There will be new moves, locations, and gameplay features, while the standard six button control scheme remains. Ryu and Ken return along with Chun-Li and Dhalsim, but beyond that the character roster is a mystery. And then there's the issue of what platform(s) the game will end up on, which at this point Capcom is keeping close to its chest (if you search 1UP's database, you'll find listings for arcade, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, but those are just guesses based on the graphical quality).

For the full reveal of the game -- including hands-on impressions, a rundown of the new gameplay system, and loads of details on new features -- look for the January 2008 issue of EGM in stores soon and hitting subscribers any day now. And then after you check the issue out, keep your eye on 1UP's Street Fighter IV hub page for ongoing coverage continuing into January.

    going 3d

i'm no historian, but i'm fairly sure (e.g. 100% positive) that going 3d is what killed mortal kombat

Haha, that's true. But the makers of SF are smart...they are keeping the 2D elements of the game. The only differences are the upgraded looks of the characters and the backgrounds.

Actually bandito i think the 3D will only be in cut scenes while keeping a better graphic 2D look in the fighting gameplay. But either way im a huge Street fighter fan, used to play it on SNES with my cousin probably the best SF games there was. I loved the Playstation version but growing up with SNES and Street fighter its still the best one to date.

I'm more than happy to hear that the gameplay is still 2D, but I don't like the 3D look at all. Something about the character models I have seen in pictures thus far just look kind of funny. Maybe I'll change my mind after seeing it in motion, but I don't know right now. I just pray this won't be Street Fighter EX all over again.

I see what you're saying, iLLmatic, and I hope they add in a 2D/3D feature to be able to switch back and forth. That way, everyone's happy, heh.

That picture of Ryu does remind me of Akira in the VF series now.

I've never been the biggest street fighter fan, but online would definitely make me consider buying it.

Interesting move to take espically how we know some 3D games were killed because of this but then again it has worked for others. Can not wait for more information about this ^^

Looks like i was right its only 3D for cut scenes not gameplay. This game should be killer.

What cut scenes are you talking about?
