A recent interview with DMC4 game’s producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi to talk about the game. It seems the reason for Nero being the new protagonist on DMC4, was not only to benefit new players but Xbox players as well.
Since its the first DMC title to be on an xbox.
He also states with the power of the new systems they can have much larger areas to play in, much broader fields to play in, and the most obvious beautiful stages for the game to take place in.

With new characters he says there's a tutorial to ease in players in the action controls. And new players will enjoy the storyline even if they never played the other 3 games. Team xbox asks there are some arrogant personalities and says if thats a reflection on Hiroyuki Kobayashi personality he responds back

quote
He’s going after the girl with all his might…and, well, you know I my work with all my might as well, so maybe there’s a bit of a connection there [laughs again]

Can you run down the Devil May Cry story for us?

Hiroyuki Kobayashi: The first three Devil May Cry came out on PS2. The hero of the game, Dante, he fights with demons, and it involves a mix of using swords and using gunplay to create kind of a new style of action game. They were games that were very well respected in the industry.

Being that this is the first Devil May Cry game on an Xbox system, what kind of power do the new consoles give you to put your vision down for the Devil May Cry series?

Hiroyuki Kobayashi: As this is the first game for Xbox users, that’s one of the reasons we have a new protagonist, Nero, the new main character appear in this game—so the people who’ve played Xbox up until now can catch up with the series pretty easily.

In terms of what the new consoles allow us to do, first of all, in this game we can have Nero’s special powers, the Devil Bringer—it’s sort of the tiered action combination with the sword and the gunplay that we’ve had up until now—so that allows us to create a new way to play the game that we couldn’t do before. Also, with the power of the consoles, we can create much larger areas to play in, much broader fields to play in and obviously much more beautiful-looking stages for the game to take place in.

For new players who are coming to the series, what will they get out of this, if this is their first experience with Devil May Cry?

Hiroyuki Kobayashi: We have created this game so that, if you haven’t played games in the series before, you will enjoy it. First of all, the story…you can enjoy that even if you don’t know the story of the other three games in the series—it won’t affect your enjoyment of this story.

In terms of the action and how you play the game, we have a tutorial to ease you in to how the actions of the game are controlled. Outside the tutorial, in game it also teaches you, step by step, all the new movements and, as the difficulty gets greater and greater, it can teach you how to play it. It’ll really encourage people who’ve never tried it before to give it a try.

That's good. I haven't played any of the previous 3 DMC games, so hopefully the DMC4 will be like what Kobayashi said.

Start with DMC3, then move onto 1 and 2. Same thing for the MGS series...because their 3's are prequels. DMC4 is shaping up better the closer we head towards it's release date.
