It's another zany sales week in Japan, with DS and Wii sales shooting through the roof in a Nintendo-dominated top ten, and some weird and disheartening PSP sales.
There was a flip-flop at the top of the rankings, as this week's top seller was
last week's #2,
Mario Party DS, selling 180k units. The #2 seller is last week's #1,
Wii Fit, with 124k units sold. Rounding out the top five is the only non-DS/Wii game in the top ten,
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3 - 116k - BD Version),
Professor Layton and Pandora's Box (NDS - 74k) and
Super Mario Galaxy (WII - 74k).
As for hardware, we can notice the holiday season kicking in, as we see the increases in the main hardware of the market:

With the numerous DS and Wii games in the top ten and top fifty software, it's no surprise at the hardware numbers for the DS Lite and the Wii, with some strong numbers for both. For the DS, it's the continued popularity, and the strong sales of Mario Party DS (#1), Professor Layton and Pandora's Box (#4), and Dragon Quest IV (#6), leading. As for the Wii, it's an interesting scenario: Wii Fit (#2) sales and the holiday season are leading to the high Wii sales, which is in turn pushing out the door copies of other Wii games, most notably Super Mario Galaxy (#5), Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (#7), Wii Sports (#8) and Wii Play (#9). All around, it's a good time for Nintendo.
Sony manages to sneak one game into the Nintendo-controlled top ten: Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, garnering a good amount of sales and pushing some PS3 units out the door, with the PS3 garnering a respectable total of 64k units. The more alarming thing for the PlayStation family is PSP sales. With the release of the new Red PSP, PSP Hardware sales double to 185k units sold, but they go out the door with a terrible tie ratio. There is only a grand total of three PSP games in the top 50: Hot Shots Golf Portable 2 (#19), Monster Hunter Portable 2nd (#39), and
Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaiki da (#45). With the #10 (WII - Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon: The Labyrinth of Forgotten Time) only selling 41k copies, the numbers at the #19, #39 and #45 spots aren't as high as they should, considering the number of PSPs that went out the door this past week. The new color effect held true for the hardware, but it didn't have the desired software effects.
The fall for Lost Odyssey from #7 to #50 shows how much of an impact the game didn't have, and with the lackluster Blue Dragon and ASH sales calls into question Mistwalker's capabilities. The studio is headed by the creator of Final Fantasy,
Hironobu Sakaguchi. It's hard to see the studio simply not performing. Here's to hoping Lost Odyssey fares better in other territories.
As for other notable games outside the top ten, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (WII) debuts at #27 and Cooking Mama 2 (NDS) debuts at #48.
