Video game taxes just don't sit well with gamers...

Avalith | December 24, 2007 | News | Misc
Wisconsin state senator Jon Erpenbach has authored a bill and proposed it to the state legislature that would place an extra sales tax on purchases of electronic products, most notably video games. However, dedicated gamer Justin Sallows disagrees with the tax.

Apparently, the tax is to help cover the cost of moving seventeen year-olds who commit nonviolent crimes back into the juvenile system because they're all treate as adults.
"No. 1, I think it's the right thing to do because not all 17-year-olds belong in the adult system when it comes to non-violent offenses," said Erpenbach. "But secondly, in the long, run the numbers show that if you treat certain situations in a juvenile delinquent-type of a setting, as opposed to an adult setting, chances are there's going to be less of a problem when the kid gets older."

So would this bill just be for Wisconsin or all over the US? If it's the latter, I'd surely be more pissed. The 17-year-olds are a year away from being treated as adults, so big deal, no need to punish us by adding more tax...8% in NYC is enough.

It's just Wisconsin at this time.

Um no sorry, i disagree with this Move. I'd rather not have more tax to pay for games when they're already 60 bucks.

      Be grateful it's only $60.

I didn't read the source article but thinking that this legislation could ever be implemented is laughable. Instituting a tax on video games with the intent of covering costs of moving 17 year old offenders back into juvenile custody is never gonna fly.

It's purely speculation and more than likely this state rep's peers will vote nay on this coming into effect.

This just kinda seems like another "it's video games and their evil" thing. If this ever got passed, in my opinion it would just prove that the people who passed it are biased or simply don't care.

It's pretty stupid this though. Reminds me when some tools in Australia wanted to ban the use of the word "Mate" in everyday use, only to be really used to friends and such.
