The Wii console has been hacked.

black doom | December 30, 2007 | News | Wii
Actually, the more I think about it the more probable it seems it really is for the first time ever. All the other hacks seem to have always seemed to have been Wii-mote ones, now it is actually the console itself.

You see Nintendo-scene received a communication about the hack from someone known to them as Ski Freak. Read on below:
Ski Freak wrote in to tell us of an interesting presentation that took place at the 24th Annual Chaos Communication Congress (24C3) right now; it would appear that a fully hacked Wii capable of running native homebrew with full hardware access has been presented.

From the report:

The guys over at 24C3 just demoed a Wii hack that is set to provide native wii
homebrew in the near future (not running in GC mode, and with full access to all the Wii hardware!)

They were able to find encryption and decryption keys by doing full memory
dumps at runtime over a custom serial interface. Using these keys, they were
able to create a Wii ‘game’ that ran their own code (their demo happened to show live sensor/Wiimote information, amongst a few other things).

I have no comment on this...

Only that someone hacking a Wii console and using it for homebrew is useful information that Nintendo need to resolve.

To be honest I have no clue what homebrew is.

Applications for the device created by users who do not have licensing or certification from the company in question. Basically a "unofficial" piece of software (which could very well be a game) created by pretty much anyone!

You can read up on homebrew games on Wikipedia.

Interesting. This could be used for some interesting new games, and I'm all for homebrew, as long as it is just that. I can sadly see this being used for pirating software, though =\...

EDIT: Just curious, but does anyone why was I rated down?

I'm taking a stab in the dark but...that could be used to illegally replace the Virtual Console? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It may seem funny now, but it could turn out with a lot of pirating, games created illegally, etc.

This sucks for Ninty. They're not the only ones with full access to the Wii anymore.
