New ‘Ultimate’ Xbox 360 set to eclipse Sony’s PS3

mistermostyn | January 03, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
The Core Xbox 360, the 30GB PS3, the 20GB Premium Xbox 360, the 60GB and 80GB PS3, the 120GB Elite Xbox 360... and now the 320GB Ultimate Xbox 360 with a built-in HD-DVD player. Will Microsoft's rumoured console beast deal a death blow to Sony?
Not content with the Core, Premium, and Elite models, Microsoft is apparently preparing the autumnal introduction of its Ultimate edition, a 320GB behemoth that comes equipped with 1080p HDMI, onboard Wi-Fi connectivity, HD audio output, cool-running 65nm hardware, a near silent fan, IPTV compatibility, and an onboard HD-DVD player.

The last thing we need is yet another SKU.

I sort of agree with you there. Taking into account those that have been depreciated, the current amount of Xbox 360 variants in the wild totals to six - "Core", the updated "Core" with HDMI, "Arcade", "Premium", the "Premium" update with HDMI and the recently released "Elite"! However, having said that, this "Ultimate" setup sounds very appealing. It's just a shame that the original release couldn't have been such a behemoth.

I wonder what price point such a system, if announced, would retail at. Could this replace the Elite?

It's great to know that I spent $100 on the 360 wireless adpater and a $450 on a console that barely has any GB to know that one's possibly coming with a lot more GB and wi-fi.

320? I don't know anyone who has even half filled the Elite. A lot of nice features there, but most should have been released at launch. I wonder what price it will be sold at.

I just don't understand all of this "death blow" nonsense. Sony has it's niche, as does Nintendo. They all go up and down like a teeter totter.

Wow. This'll probably cost about 500 freaking dollars. It does sound very, very nice though.

What? It'll be much more than $500.
It isn't confirmed by Microsoft, so it's just speculations at the moment although it does sound pretty damn good. They should leave this though, and maybe do little updates to the current versions.

If it has a built in HD-DVD drive, I'm sure the would still only develop games on regular DVD, because otherwise only some people could get them. I doubt this will happen.

All this says to me is that they've realised they've made mistakes with previous version, and are intent on fixing the mistakes (by mistakes I refer to the fact that it didn't have a HD-DVD as a standard, 1080p HDMI etc...)

I honestly wonder how much it will be, and will be gobsmacked if it's less than £400.

So what do you take from the many SKU's created for the PS3? Why put out so many different packages if (according to sony) it's so damn easy to upgrade the HDD yourself?

If it is released and they do develop HD-dvd based games, it will be both a deathblow to the fans and the company. Why would they go with an inferior media?

The thing is, they should have gone with HD-DVD from the start....DVD9 is already seeing limitations....

They can't go to HD-DVD now, because there would be so many with standard DVD drive based X-box systems (and I doubt many really have the HD-DVD attachment, and even if they do, it is USB based, data bandwidth limitation would be troublesome)....

This woul be a 'niche' system, appeaing only to those that 'NEED' to have the best of the best X-box >_>

Wouldn't sell THAT well, I bet...not even as good as the Elite, I would imagine (so late in the game, and probably very expensive)....

        Hardly.
Seen Mass Effect? Seen Gears of War?
        DVD9 is fine for now.

There's no denying that those games would benefit greatly from the extra storage space found on HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs... but yeah, I've yet to see a PS3 compare to those two as far as quality goes.

          More space =/= better games.

Hats off to all companies for trying to improve the product. Unfortunately, I fear the price point will be just a bit too high for many casual gamers, myself included. I'm looking for a good time, not a 320 GB HD DVD beast. If I grab a 360, it'll be the 80gig...

Krank Juice, just to let you know, the 360 is outselling the PS3. It dosn't need a new CPU to beat it, because it already is.

what? by sales? have you ever thought of the fact that the 360 had the head start? and to be honest, i would rather have the system that does more things and does things better and can have the tech for some awesome games thatn have a system that is selling slightly better due to their head start.

I'm interested in the built-in Wi-Fi and cooler fan, but honestly those should have been included in every model. I'm about to buy an Xbox 360 (I have the money, I just need to go to the store), but I don't think I'm going to wait for this. I'm not interested in a 320 GB hard drive or an HD-DVD drive, and those will certainly ramp up the price. Microsoft should stop with the SKUs. Some of these are standard features that should have been in every SKU.

I think I'll just buy the updated Premium, or possibly the Elite.

Wow 320 gb hard drive, because you really need that much memory? And besides, it's not updating the processing output is it? So, it only beats the PS3 in Memory. Wow.

PSN is perfectly fine, stop whining. The only thing the Xbox can hold against the PS3 is their gaming library, and that has nothing to do with an upgraded version of a console. So this "Ultimate Xbox 360" is rather pointless.

PSN is fine for a free service, no doubt.

When tivo like functions are introduced to Live in the future, 320gb of storage would kick ass. Plenty of people would use it. Obviously, it's pointless to people who wouldn't benefit from it, but spending $500+ for something you get little use from is stupid anyways.

      Oh, wait...

Ouch Cdemon. I don't know why people are focusing on the massive GB space...they probably don't have much videos/music/games on their PC in that case. It's called, looking towards the future, and 320 GB sounds pretty reasonable, if this is going to happen, that is.

This article isn't any new though. Search through gamegrep with 360 ultimate and you'll find i made an article about it as well. Which was a rumor cause a gamestop employee claimed he got some info from MS.

This doesn't benefit anyone. I mean its like all the core users, and how they were saying they were getting rid of the core system all together. That would not only piss off some 360 gamers but the core users as well. Bringing this into the game now with HD-DVD functionality, is just going to piss off 12 million 360 users and MS will lose sales and consumer/fan respect. Its like What Smoke said.
So i really don't think MS will do this cause it makes no sense.
The PS3 different models aren't the same as this one. Since they are practically the same without less space and minor things like USB ports and Memory duo slots, which most PS3 users don't use anyway. Even i find my self not using all of them. The lack of BC in the 40GB is the only small issue, but doesn't affect next gen gaming.

A move like this will affect next gen gaming for MS and fans, Considering the amount of money the console is going to be, its going to be more than PS3 and with that comes less sales, so i don't expect this to happen, probably won't since its a rumor.
