Full DS Downloads Not Coming

Akira_EX | January 04, 2008 | News | Wii DS
Well, remember this? Or maybe the original NYTimes article? False alarm. No full DS Downloads are coming our way.

Gamasutra has been told by a representative from Nintendo of America that full DS downloads, as stated by the aforementioned New York Times article, will not happen, and the story was incorrect. Instead, the representative clarified that the part of the article in question refers to the Wii's "Everyone's Nintendo" Channel which allows for DS Demo downloads.

Looks like this dream dies for now.
A Nintendo of America has told Gamasutra that an earlier report from the New York Times claiming full DS downloads would be coming from a future Wii channel were incorrect, saying DS demos will be as far as the service will offer.

The article maintained that Reggie Fils-Aime had announced plans for full downloads in a conversation with the Times on future DS and Wii integration, but Nintendo of America has said the story was incorrect.

"Users can download games to play on Wii," the representative said, "and, in the future, the Nintendo DS will be able to receive demo versions of some DS games from Wii, but not the entire game. The demo will be erased once the Nintendo DS is turned off."

Nintendo has already launched its "Everyone's Nintendo" Wii channel in Japan, offering information and streaming videos on upcoming Nintendo titles, as well as DS game demos. No further information on when the service will launch in other territories has yet been made available.

Well that sucks...only demos in the future, and they are gone as soon as we turn off the DS, so what's the point? ._.

Personally I dig demos and think companies should utilize more of them in the future.

I think after a couple months of demos Nintendo might plan to add full games.
Nintendo always takes small steps with things like these.

Another example of people expecting too much from Nintendo.

They've always been extremely careful of digital distribution due to piracy issues. When will we actually get it? I'm guessing when Nintendo is 100% sure that their games won't be pirated or bootlegged.

But what's the point of downloading them, transferring them to the DS to try out, only to automatically get rid of them the second we turn off the DS?

I like to take my time in deciding to buy a game after playing it's demo, also taking my time with the demo. Give the demo a few days, see how that goes...but this method's a bit tedious.

The DS itself doesn't have much onboard memory, mainly because the memory itself was more meant for single cart multiplayer. And obviously, you don't need to keep that if your other players have left.

Besides, I'm assuming that the demo is stored on the Wii itself after the initial download, so you can easily retrieve it again. So it's not like you have to access the Wii Store all over again.

And it's a bit harder to pirate from temporary media. Not impossible, but harder.

Oh I see, thanks MusiKon. Guess that does make things easier, shame the DS doesn't have much memory to store the demos, though.

It didn't make much sense to download an entire game anyways. Where the hell do you store it? If they sold blank DS cartridges, and created a format and system to let you download them, it would only take hackers like a week to derive their own system of downloading ALL DS games.

    Demoes makes more sense.

Yep, that would lead to piracy. Look what's happened to PSN downloads for PSP.
