With Metal Gear Solid 4 set to arrive as one of 2008's biggest gaming titles, should expectant fans be worried about claims that its frame rate is swinging between 30 and 60fps?

According to the game gurus over at PunchJump, the game build presently on show at CES 2008, which showcases the same exterior warzone first seen at the E for All expo in August of 2007, is fluctuating between 30 and 60 frames per second – depending on the intensity levels attributed to its on-screen action.

As long as gameplay isn't affected (i.e. major framerate issues) then it doesn't really bother me.

Though judging by the source, it sounds like the framerate drop is "barely noticeable". That's fine with me. So why is this even news? I'm hardly going to notice a few less-than-perfect "graphical textures".

Why did GG get thumbed down?...
I agree with you, GG, doesn't seem like too big a problem, and I'm more for getting the game to see how the story ends anyways. If a lot is happening on-screen at once, you can't expect a high FPS rate in the first place.

30-60? Can anybody really spot the difference? No?

yeah but if its running at 30fps, thats the maximum it can possibly run at, if shit gets hectic on-screen then the framerate could easily drop below 24, then you will spot the difference.

They're saying it is running between 30 and 60 fps, meaning that it may drop to 30 fps during certain sequences. Not sure if it's true, but it seems irrelevant anyway because people really won't be able to tell much of a difference.

I would have expected this game, of all games, to be running at 60fps hands down. If it turns out to be closer to 30 on average, I have to say I would be surprised, but its not like there's any way I'm not buying the game.

I hope it doesn't. You can still tell a difference between 30 and 60, as 60 will run a lot smoother. I hope they sort this out. But it's not the end of the world if they don't.

I hope you guys realize MGS3 ran at a capped 30 frames per second. Games like MGS which aren't as fast paced as other games make no difference whether they're playing at 30 fps or 60 fps. Don't make a big deal out of something you guys don't understand.

You do realize that there is exponentially more detail on screen at any given time in MGS4, right?

Yet it's still running at or above 30 frames per second. It's got "exponentially more detail", according to your very own words, yet it's still running smoother than MGS3 did 100% of the time.

        Therefore, quit yo bitchin!

You. You're whining and saying you would be "Surprised" if it ran at 30FPS, as if it's a bad thing. It's damn near IMPOSSIBLE to tell the difference between things running above 30FPS either way. 30FPS is still extremely smooth, and definitely not something to complain about.

Yeah, but will fanboys care? Give 'em a little while and they'll be pouncing on it.

Why do framerate nitpicks seem to be a growing trend with PS3 games, whether not that there really IS lag? Seriously.

But if its max is only at 30FPS, it could well drop below 10 in real big firefights. That's terrible- wait, no, 30-60 at any given time.

Why can't the PS3 attempt a framerate lock? 360 games do it all the time. Why can't the PS3 have a set framerate lock?

A frame lock would be great for the game, we had a hands on with the game a few times and the consistency of the game is viewable, it has been on consoles and PC for ages. The difference is the fluidity of the game. On a capped system the game has less variation, you wont notice it going between 30-35 but at higher frame-rate levels the reproduction becomes unnatural, it even happens in movies where film will steadily run at a 24.97fps rate while video will stream at 30fps (29.97fps). Much of what people seem to enjoy with fast paced movements and action come from the move to digital.

The overall amount of variation isn't that high, but a rate cap would null the whole issue entirely if it isn't able to stay steady at 60.

Don't mean to make a fanboyish comment here, but do you honestly think Kojima will release a game - MGS, no less, his creation without making sure the gamers don't get shafted for some reason? Why doubt the series now, it's already impressive game as is. I'm willing to sacrifice a little, probably barely noticable lag for an enigma of a game...
