Although it had hefty competition, we selected Super Mario Galaxy as our Game of the Year because the spectacular platformer embodies the very best attributes of old-school game design -- namely, unsurpassed pick-up-and-play control and highly engaging, clever in-level challenges. Moreover, Galaxy truly feels like the spiritual successor to Super Mario 64 thanks to its homages to classic Mushroom Kingdom faces and places, and at the same time its new outer space theme nurtures an entirely fresh atmosphere overrun with different gravities and unpredictable upside-down worlds. Nintendo's famous plumber makes the old-style new again in this amazing Wii platformer.

On multiple levels actually.
It's actually a sci-fi/action-RPG sorta game. And it's really brilliant.
Overall, I thought it was rather obvious that Galaxy would be game of the year.
Still, can't fault them. SMG is a fantastic game.
I hope they don't bypass these games. -_-
