Although it was a very tough decision, IGN has finally picked a winner. Super Mario Galaxy has won IGN's Game of the Year Award. Coming in close second was Bioshock, followed by Call of Duty 4.

Although it had hefty competition, we selected Super Mario Galaxy as our Game of the Year because the spectacular platformer embodies the very best attributes of old-school game design -- namely, unsurpassed pick-up-and-play control and highly engaging, clever in-level challenges. Moreover, Galaxy truly feels like the spiritual successor to Super Mario 64 thanks to its homages to classic Mushroom Kingdom faces and places, and at the same time its new outer space theme nurtures an entirely fresh atmosphere overrun with different gravities and unpredictable upside-down worlds. Nintendo's famous plumber makes the old-style new again in this amazing Wii platformer.

I found it funny that all the runner ups were Xbox 360 FPS games. >_>

    On multiple levels actually.

Hey! Mass Effect is not a First Person Shooter.

It's actually a sci-fi/action-RPG sorta game. And it's really brilliant.

It is rather humorous that the runner ups were FPS games, seeing as how "childish" Galaxy is.

Overall, I thought it was rather obvious that Galaxy would be game of the year.

Concepts such as the destruction of everything and mass suicide make it slightly more sensible.

Of course Galaxy would be game of the year....for the Wii. As to everything else, including the highly praised 360 games that got all of those awards at the Spike Video Game awards show, that is just awesome.

Im actually happy Galaxy made IGNs game of the year, I find 360 games overrated.

Suprised IGN chose this over CoD4, Halo and other FPS's.

Still, can't fault them. SMG is a fantastic game.

No, it wasn't obvious. It could've been BioShock, or Halo 3, or w/e. Nintendo isn't God, you know. Stop acting like it.

eh. not really. if mario galaxy had came out at the beginning of the year, it wouldn't have won. the 'game of the year' is always only like a few months old because they always forget about the super badass games from the beginning of the year.

True. It's more fresh it people's heads that way. This year might be different, though, because with big names such as Super Smash Bros. and Metal Gear Solid, how can they not include those for at least nominations in the 2008 awards?

I hope they don't bypass these games. -_-

It really doesn't matter that much, honestly. GI, IGN, GS, etc all have their own GotY.

I didn't think it would win best award, because there were a few better game in my opinion. Still, I think it it deserves the award, because it WAS an awesome game.

Nice, Mario nabbing yet another reward. The entire series is one that never sells out on the fans, no matter how many times the poor fool has to rescue the princess...
