PS3hax.net has created a new application for the PS3 called the "megabox." The application is similar in respects to the Xbox Media Center on the original Xbox. The program requires no linux or any other additional software to install. Some features of the Megabox include:
Firefox
System P2P
System VoIP and instantaneous mail
Emulation of games of almost all the platforms. (Reading of ROM's from any unit, even from local NETWORK.)
Game for LINUX in 3D (to still not contrasted.)
Possibility of launching PS3 games directly from MegaBOX.
(In the future possibly ISO loader)
Some 1337 hax on, well PS3hax.net has created a new application for Sony's Playstation 3 called the Megabox. The Megabox is, and I quote: "similar to a media center, similar to the XBMC on Xbox 1, fully functioning on the PS3."
Excited? I am.
The even more exciting part of this story is that this would require no installation whatsoever and is entirely open source, so basically just the program to your CD/USB drive and copy it to your PS3. You don't need linux or any kind of degree in computer programming.
If you want to try it out go here for a tutorial on how this stuff work,s what you need to do and who you need to pay money too. (not really)
The full features of Megabox are listed below:
1-Reproduction in the premises of almost all the formats of video, including the MKV.
2-Reproduction in Streaming (from Internet or the local network) reproduces just like in the point 1 that if, the MKV would cost to him more but, depending on the bandwidth of Internet, since in local network we have all 100MB.
to 3-Encoder and to decoder of DivX, DVD, TDT and others.
4-Recording to CD's/DVD's etc. (Necessary external recorder USB)
5-Possibility of using compatible digital cameras with Linux.

Comments
Sony isn't a big fan of unauthorizzed third party software on their consoles (PSP anyone?)...
ESPECIALLY since it has ROM capabilities >_>
No hdmi output support also.
