Having all-but shrugged off its promise of backward compatibility with the introduction of the cheaper 40GB PlayStation 3, a job ad appears to indicate that Sony is looking to bring BC back with full PlayStation brand support through the PlayStation 4. Image credit: MNgilen.

According to a job advert uncovered by German gaming site GameFront.de, Sony Computer Entertainment is presently on the prowl for a software engineer in order to develop backward compatibility for the PlayStation 3 and an unspecified next-gen console - which, given the inclusion of the PlayStation 3 on the ad, you’d have to assume is the PlayStation 4.

Sony’s employment listing reportedly outlines that the successful applicant will be tasked with creating and optimising emulation software for backward compatibility covering every gaming platform Sony has release to date, ranging from the original PlayStation through to the PlayStation 2, PSP handheld, and the PlayStation 3.

People who create and develop emulators for the PS and PS2 will be perfect for this job. Sony should reach underground and bring up some quality talent

They've brought in people who make emulators and ROMZ as well as a few homebrewers to work on future PSP and PS3 firmware updates. =]

    hey thats a good idea...

also im interested to see where this PSP emulation goes...
cos the whole point of a Playstaion PORTABLE is that it's PORTABLE.

but focusing specifically on backwards compatibility/emulation is a very good move by sony.

They'd better bring Backwards Compatibility back. Sony have already stuffed up with the different PS3 models having some/no/all Backwards Compatibility. (especially when some countries are stuck with only the 40gb model - which has no BC. That's just cruel).

People say things like "Why don't you just keep your PS2?" or "You should play look play PS3 games on PS3, not past games". But why is it such a bad thing to want to play games from an older console? And why should I be forced to keep my old consoles because Sony won't cater for what I (and many other people want)?

If Sony bring BC back in the PS4, then good move.
They have obviously realized that this is what the fans want.

Just wait for the 80GB. I'll be suprised if it isn't in PAL territories before the end of year.

Its not coming out next week. These projects take years to perfect. You think Nintendo and Microsoft aren't planning for the next generation?

What would be the point? Quite frankly I'm glad they're sticking to the simple linear numbered structure. PS4 sounds better than say... PSUltra or PS360...

I think it's WAY too early to worry about the features PS4 will have. They will change their minds a million times in between anyway.....shit look at how often they change their minds with the current PS3 platform!

God it's early to be talking about this!
PS4 should have backward compatibility, it's just logical.

Ditto, I expect it within about 3 years >_> By Fall 2010 to 2011 that is to say >_>

Sony has already looked at both the PS4 and PS5 >_> Can't let the competition jump ahead of them, now can they?

I honestly feel this is going to end up being like where Superbikes are right now. Where they do a major revision, which is the new platform, release games for it; than do a minor revision every year for two years, that would be the upgraded firmware. Than on the third year release yet another major revision, which would be the next generation console.
