80GB PS3 being discontinued?

Gasp! There may be a discontinuation of the 80 PS3. With the success of the PS2 sony says that backwards compatibility isn't really needed. It only costs Sony money, when their surveys show that most people don't even use backwards compatibility. Basically, they want to save money, and dumping the 80 gig model is the best way to do it.
With the continued success of the PlayStation 2, Sony has been making a lot of implications both here and worldwide that backwards compatibility really isn't a high priority for the PlayStation 3 (and might actually be on the low end). Between comments of "choosing to focus on the PlayStation 2 consumer with the PlayStation 2" and leaving no BC-enabled SKUs available in Europe or most recently in Japan, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before we saw the company pare down the SKU options to one choice: the cheaper, BC-gimped 40GB model.

Today we have another hint of things moving in that direction, as PS3 Fanboy alerts us to a supposed leaked internal memo from retail giant Best Buy. The memo, sent in by an anonymous employee, states in no uncertain terms that, "The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time. It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28."

The memo goes on: "The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time. This means that there currently isn't a version that is PS2 compatible." That's straightforward enough. In one final note, the letter claims "Sony hasn't made any announcements about new products."

    Well where the hell do they take these surveys? About 95% of the people that complain here is because of the lack of BC.

    Not very smart for Sony to do this. BC is the reason why I continued to support Sony's products. Here's to hoping my PS3 never dies.

    Funny enough every PS2 owner I know who is thinking of upgrading to PS3 wouldn't do it without BC cuz they don't plan on having 2 consoles (retiring the old one or giving it to a friend would be common plans).

    How many different editions have there been now? 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB right? I didn't think they'd discontinue the 80GB.

    Sony should take a look at what people actually want, rather than playing a guessing game. We want one console to choose from and we don't want features (such as BC) taken away. We're paying all this money for models that keep doing less and less.

    I was hoping that the 80gb would come out in PAL regions because it has BC. But looks like it's being discontinued before we even get a chance to have a look at it >_>
