Cooper Lawrence, the woman who bashed Mass Effect recently on Fox News for its supposed pornographic-esque sex scene, has admitted she was wrong in the New York Times.

While you frequently hear about people (”experts”) bashing videogames, it isn’t common when one of them actually admits they were wrong. Yesterday, I made a post about the Cooper Lawrence/Fox News/Geoff Keighley incident, where Mass Effect was described as depicting “full digital nudity and sex” amongst other inaccuracies. Well, it seems that Cooper Lawrence has admitted she was wrong in the New York Times, saying

“I recognize that I misspoke. I really regret saying that, and now that I’ve seen the game and seen the sex scenes it’s kind of a joke.

Before the show I had asked somebody about what they had heard, and they had said it’s like pornography. But it’s not like pornography. I’ve seen episodes of ‘Lost’ that are more sexually explicit.”

Yay! I am so glad to hear that. While it was still wrong for her to talk about a subject in which she obviously had no knowledge about, this will certainly help redeem her (at least in my eyes). People *bleep* up, but it certainly isn’t as common as one making a mistake as it is when one admits doing so.

As for the others on this specific Fox News program….

You could learn from her.

Well it's nice that she admits she was wrong. I just wonder if she realized she was wrong because of all the backlash from the gaming community.

Getting your book trashed is a fairly good motive. Authors of negatively-rated books usually don't do well in other areas, if they're discredited in print, they're discredited on tv, in film, whatever else. Media is actually very connected.

But yes, good to see she's at least tried to fix the problem.

now she just needs to get on the news and apologize so the world doesn't have one more thing to hold against us gamers.

Good on her for admitting she was wrong, at least. Not many people actually bother to do that, especially admitting they're wrong to gamers. Not many "game bashers" take gamers seriously enough to do that.

Now if only she could get back on Fox and set the record straight on TV in front of all the people who watch her.

If you read her actual statement, she does not apologize. Rather she shifts the blame to the person who prepped her. I checked a variety of sources, including the original NYT story and never in any of the articles do I see the words "I'm sorry".

As far as I can tell, this is simply a bs pr combover in an attempt to distract people from the fact that she has not apologized.

It is because of people like her that my children are not allowed in some people's homes because they hear that video games are all bad and since I work in the game industry I must be one of the amoral types who want kids to play the "hot coffee" patch of GTA SA.

I won't be satisfied until she spends at least one day with people in the game industry on her radio show, which is on M-F 7p-10p and can be reached at 877-6-cooper

Right on the money there, L0KI. She seems to just want people to get off her back, mainly gamers. Still, I agree with GG, Lawrence should bring this up on TV to make an even bigger step forward, and actually apologize. At least she admits she was wrong, though.

Until people learn to take responsibility for their damn children, people will always be screaming "Think of the children when you make your games!" Please that is why there are ratings, if parents can't purchase the appropriate games for their kids that is their problem not the video game producers problem.
