Jack Thompson resumes his GTA IV is a 'murder simulator' spiel

mistermostyn | January 28, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
Everyone's favourite videogame activist and Miami-based lawyer - Jack Thompson - is preparing yet another legal attack on Rockstar Games and Take Two Interactive ahead of the April 29 release of sandbox epic Grand Theft Auto IV.
While noting that Take-Two has enjoyed a 12 percent share boost on the back of GTA IV’s confirmed retail release date, Thompson warns that the market should also factor in "the downside risk coming Take-Two’s way with the sale of this "Mature" game to kids, which is a murder simulator for violence against women, cops, and innocent bystanders…"

    Jack's still practising law?

What happened to all those lawsuits against him? Haven't they occured yet? Or has he somehow wormed his way out of them?

You know, this is one of those rare instances where Mr. Thompson should grab his chest, collapse and never get up again.

Ugh him again. Why can't he go after the "evil and illegal sale of chocolate to kids under the age of 3" or some other *bleep*ed crap. Between Fox and him, games and gamers just don't get a break. Wonder who's worse....Fox or Jacko.

As much as I don't like Jack or his tactics, it seems he is focused on preventing the game being sold to minors this time around and that is something I fully support. It's children buying M games from retail and parents who let their children play these games and then bitching about "I didn't know what the M mean!" that causes such grief.

Yeah I agree on that but that's not Rockstars vault. You can't blame R* for parents buying the game for their kids.

I fully agree with you, and the Article stated Jack was going after the retailers, NOT Rockstar.

"It’s interesting to note that Thompson’s latest drive against the Grand Theft Auto series focuses solely on the one mandate he always stands firmly behind while shooting in a variety of different directions – underage sales of videogame content clearly labelled for a mature audience. No screaming from the rooftops for Rockstar or Take-Two’s blood on this occasion, just a call for retailers to be held accountable for sales of violent videogames to children below the age of 17."

Here's an idea Jack. Let people buy what they want. Seriously, if an EDUCATED parent knows what they are buying their kid, and the kid is smart enough to know it's only a game, then buy it. You can't tell parents how to parent, and you can't stop retail outlets from selling stuff. If you want to do that, run for Chinese government.

And about the educated parent thing, I think parents need to learn more about what they are buying their kids, after all that is a part of responsible parenting. I'm 18, and I'm NOT a parent, but I know when I do have kids, I will be checking the games I buy for them and even myself. If I deem the ggame too violent or too mature, I won't let them play. If they cry, then too bad, they'll get over it.

Wait till Jack walks up to rockstar's door one day, and rockstar says,"Go to Hell,Jack."

Man, when will this guy die and leave our games alone!?

I think the American's should get what we've got in Europe or Britain at least. The age rating, eg 18 for GTA, it's much more obvious. But still, I think he should shut it, not EVERY kid that plays GTA is gonna go out killing people, Manhunt is waay more violent that GTA.

Great. Just when I thought we might actually enjoy some peace and quiet for a while, he decides to open his big trap. He's always the noisiest when it comes to GTA games, but I can't wait for him to be silenced when the judge presiding over his bar trial decides to strip his license. How ironic would it be for the decision to be handed down on April 29th?

He is no longer stirring up much attention...he is much like 'the boy who cried wolf'...the first couple of times, sure, people got riled up...but now everyone is like 'meh? He is still on about that?'

People should remember, he is no longer legally ALLOWED to go after Take2...There was some dealings between Take 2 and Jacko last year, which ended with each agreeing to not go after the other >_>

He can't attack GTA directly now, so instead, he is going on about retailers instead...After all, in his mind, if retailers aren't allowed to sell the game, it will hurt Rockstar anyway >_>

He is on a crazy crusade, he thinks he is in the right (and I agree, no mature games to minors, unless they have maturity to deal with this stuff), but in reality, he is basically a sensationalist, he likes trying to incite fear into parents who are too dumb (or lazy) to know how to figure out the difference between M, T, and E ratings....Like I've said before, it is the same damned principle as movie ratings...

In some ways, calling for a unified rating system makes sense, since some people just can't be bothered to learn a second one, it seems >_>

He'll accomplish nothing, in the long run, I think >_>

The downside of killing him is that it would only prove his point.

Now now, it's not nice to wish death upon another like that. Torture, maybe, but not death.

Does Thompson know how many people don't care about his claims?

He's already been thoroughly discredited by the entire gaming community. One lone, egotistical, selfish man will not stop one of the biggest series in the last decade from putting out more of what it has to offer.

Someone should tell him that everyone has a choice if they want to go ahead and play GTA 4 or not.

Well this is the most sane I've seen Thompson. The idea is to get RETAILERS to stop selling to kids not attack Take-Two for making the game.

Damn! First ManHunt 2. Now this. Rockstar must make a game titled Murder Simulator 2k9 or something.
