Woolworths to become first UK High Street Retailer to drop HD DVD

After Blu Ray discs outsold by HD DVD's by 10 to 1, major UK high street retailer Woolworths have decided to drop all HD DVD discs from their stores and will solely be backing Blu Ray. HD DVD's will still be available on Woolworth's webste online, but this is still a big blow for Microsoft.
Woolworths has announced that it is to drop HD-DVD from its product mix in March – leaving Blu-Ray as the sole ‘next-gen’ DVD format in its stores.

The decision was made by Woolworths execs after Blu-Ray discs outsold HD-DVD by ten-to-one at the chain over Christmas. Woolworths will continue to sell HD-DVD online, but a new Blu-Ray-only chart will now appear in 820 stores online.

The retailer started selling both HD-DVD formats in October. “Sales figures clearly show that the market is moving towards one format of high definition DVD,” says Woolworths DVD buyer Steven McGunigel.

“The main reason is the success of Sony’s PlayStation 3 machine. Because it plays Blu-Ray discs, there are over three quarters of a million homes in the UK that can view the new high definition format. There is nowhere near that number of HD-DVD players around.

“Switching to Blu-Ray only will provide one clear offer to customers in the format they want to watch high definition movies in.”

The two competing formats have split the loyalties of Hollywood’s studios and movie distributors. Blu-Ray has been backed by Samsung, Sony, Warner, Dell, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox. HD-DVD has been backed by NEC, Microsoft and Universal.

HD-DVD is by Toshiba... not Microsoft.

It doesn't matter, MS is still supporting HD-DVD so in essence the money they gave to Toshiba for backing up the HD-DVD will hurt them as well.

I don't see this as a dig on Micro$oft. They are rumored to be making a Blu-ray add on for the 360. Microsoft didn't invest any money into HD-DVD, they didn't even include it with the 360.

They won't make a Blu Ray add on for the 360. It'll be Microsoft's next console.

Uh... No. Microsoft is already hinting at making a Blu-ray add on for the 360.

They did include it but only as a choice. They didn't want to make it standard cause MS likes giving Consumers a choice, but that move cost them.

I see this as a defeat for MS and 360, once devs utilized the Blu-ray space PS3 games will look so much better than the 360s that also includes the cell processor.
If MS includes an option of BD drive for the 360, not only would that mean that existing owners would need to re-buy all the games they already have, it would also include movies as well. Not only that it would also mean they have to pay Sony for using the drive as well as increasing the amount you have to pay. At the end of it all its just unrealistic for them to even include it as a option like HD-DVD.

It seems MS royalty screwed them selves over by not making HD-DVD drive as standard. Once you start to think about it, Who would even buy the add on to begin with, did anyone really buy the HD-DVD add on, from the people here not alot. So why waste money if people aren't going to buy it.

I have to agree with ljpdonnelly, the next system would probably have it as standard.

If the next 360 has a built in Blu-ray drive they will have in principle made the current 360 "last gen". Irregardless of your beliefs Microsoft has stated publicly that they are looking to make the BD as an add on for the 360. And why not? There are some 17 million 360 owners and if developers start making games on BD 360 owners will just need to get the add on. Do you honestly expect 17 million people to say they wasted their money on a next gen system only to need another upgraded one so soon? The next system may have it standard but Microsoft has current customers to be concerned about.

People seem to be under the impression that Microsoft was invested in HD-DVD, they were not. The flexibility of having an add on is a good move if you ask me.

I guess you didn't read my point, If they do make it so existing 360 owners need to buy the BD drive that means everyone will have to rebuild their library of games, its not realistic. And people will just be wasting money. Face it MS screwed up by not making the HD-DVD standard they will not make a add-on drive now, if lets say 2 years from now MS makes a new console it would be wasted money.

Think for a second. Its not going to happen, no matter what MS says. Its unrealistic They did back up the HD-DVD format they also promoted it and invested in that technology. But MS has money to throw around and could care less about losing money.

Why would people have to "re-buy" games and movies they already have? The old games and movies would continue to work as they do now. Why would they have to pay Sony for using Blu-ray? And if you want to watch movies in HD from your 360 you still have to "pay" for the HD-DVD add on. Instead you would connect a Blu-ray drive instead of the HD-DVD. Simple isn't it?

If I had come on sooner, I would have pointed that out too...You wouldn't need to re-buy games >_>

Not even movies....since if you bought, say, HD-DVD movies, you have a HD-DVD player (either standalone, or add-on) >_> So you'd just...keep playing your HD-DVD stuff on that existing player....

And there won't be games developed for HD-DVD/Blu-ray on the 360 for that matter (some people keep insisting this may be the case), since no dev woul go for it (as it would require people to invest in getting a HD-DVD/Blu-ray add-on, or get a second HD-DVD/Blu-ray standard 360, and 360 gamers would give massive outcry...it makes no sense, fiscally and otherwise...they'll just wait for the next gen, and learn from this mistake...

Total logical fallacy on Finalblade's part >_>

Thats exactly my point tallteen. What SS4Gogeta stated before was this
          quote
There are some 17 million 360 owners and if developers start making games on BD 360 owners will just need to get the add on

Which was my point if lets say they added a BD drive in the 360, not only would you need to re-buy your games since the BD drive won't be able to read the DVD-9(only the PS3 could read most disc's) it would just be waste of money for 360 owners and they would have an outcry. Thats what i mean here.

At best next gen they will include a standard drive like BD. Not now its unrealistic.

Finalblade, how do you conclude people will have to "re-buy" what they already have? I am saying "ADD ON". Do you know what the HD-DVD add on is? I'm not saying MS will have a built in BD but an add on like the HD-DVD add on. That way of the current 360 owners that want to add Blu-ray all they would need to do is add it on. It attaches itself to the 360 (like the HD-DVD add on) and will play only Blu-ray content and the tray in the 360 will continue to play the disk it plays. In other words there will be two disk drives available one in the 360 and one attached to the 360. It seems the words you missed so far are "add on". For say $$$ every 360 owner that wants to attach Blu-ray to their 360 can have that OPTION as they do with HD-DVD.

Making Blu-Ray as their game format next generation would be like admitting defeat. Besides, Sony will have found something better by then.

But what choice would they have? Blu ray is going to dominate at this rate and the only other option is to make their own. Trust me when the next generation comes about Microsoft will have you believing it was there plan all along to go with Blu ray.

No they won't heh... By the time the next Microsoft system is out Sony will have another 100 million sales under their belt, and its no coincidence thats its because they are always backing formats the are about to take off when their system releases.

Shame it's not a half decent company that's doing it... But oh well, don't Microsoft have a Blu-ray player sold seperatly for the 360 at about £100? Also, wouldn't MS have to pay loads to Sony to use their format? Don't shoot me for being wrong!

Errr, it is the HD-DVD add-on you're talking about >_>

And what is that jab at Sony, saying they're not a 'half decent company'? Sure, they've made mistakes, but so has MS >_> Sony should have taken more care in securing exclusives -_-

And it wouldn't be 'loads'...and MS has deep pockets, besides >_>

EVERYONE who uses Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) has to pay to use it (those that developed it paid in R&D), but for multinational corporations, it is practically pennies >_> Not a valid argument as to why they wouldn't have Blu-Ray add-on, which as SS4Gogeta stated, they've already hinted at having >_>

Taken more care in securing exclusives? Yes, definitely, for their first year. But as I've seen, the PS3 has the most exclusives of all the consoles for at least the first half of '08. I won't say they'll all be good, but the point is they've managed to get a foot up even after what happened in the former half of 2007.

1UP: In the event that HD-DVD no longer becomes a viable alternative in the retail space, how do you think Microsoft will respond to that? Peter Moore had at once said, before you released the add-on, that he was open to the possibility of releasing a Blu-ray drive if that became the consumer choice. Is that something that's still on the table for you guys?

Bell: You know, interestingly, we have a long history of partnership with Sony. Obviously, they run our software on their personal computers and other devices, so we have a 'coopetition' -- a word I learned at Microsoft when I joined. We've been talking to Blu-ray all along because we have the best piece of software in the business, called HDi. It is the backbone that powers interactivity in HD-DVD and we have that available to potentially partner with others.

You never say never. I think we'd like to see how things evolve. Our commitment, however, to HD-DVD is profound and consistent, and we have done very, very well in term of our accessory sales. We have 400 HD-DVD movies from great studios available. It's a long time between now and June.
