Arstechinca.com say that they have a mole that has been right about amny sony rumors. And a new one he brought to the website is that sony will be fading out the 80GB model to only replace it with a 120-160GB model that comes with Dual Shock 3. It seems like sony cannot stop making new SKU's.

Our inside source of all things video gaming has been right almost every time it comes out of the shadows to give us information, so I'm going to dispense with the back story. Wherever his or her information is coming from, it's usually solid. After I spoke to Sony about the possible discontinuation of the 80GB PS3 model, I lit the mole-signal.

Working late into the night on Saturday, I heard a noise behind me. For both of our safety, I didn't turn around. "You've talked to Sony," the mole said in a gravelly whisper. "Tell me what they told you."

I repeated the information we reported on Friday: Sony is sticking to a two-model approach at retail, but the company won't comment on whether or not the other model would be the 80GB system. The 40GB system seems safe. I asked the mole what information he had.

"Sony is, in fact, phasing out the 80GB PS3. Sony is going to stay with the two-SKU approach though, and the prices look to stay the same," the mole told me. I heard sirens in the background, and the mole seemed nervous. "The Spiderman 3 pack-in will disappear as well once the 80GB unit is gone. In order to maintain a similar value proposition to the 80GB/Spiderman 3 bundle, I expect to see a storage increase to 120 or 160GB at the same price point, plus the new Dual-Shock 3 controller... what are you trying to accomplish with this story?"

"I'm just trying to get to the bottom of Sony's plans for their hardware so my readers can decide whether or not they should buy now, or hold off. But I'm only one man," I say.

"Now we're two," the mole whispers, and when I look around in surprise... my informant was already gone.

As long as it has BC im sure everyone will be happy. Although this will just spike the price of that model to $600

*sigh* Make up your mind, Sony.

I can't agree with you here. I think it's pretty obvious, and smart, that they would release a new SKU with the Dual Shock 3.

I mean, I definitely saw this coming after they announced the cut of the 80gb SKU.

Definitely, we need a DualShock 3 bundle. I'm actually waiting for such a release (whether it has a bigger hard drive or not) before picking up a PlayStation 3.

They've become just as bad as Micro$oft with the SKUs...

They've become just as bad as Micro$oft with the SKUs. But why phase out the 80GB? There's no reason to pull it out at all! That means they've already trashed 3 versions.

They're phasing out the 80GB models cause the sales for them are tanking and isn't as successful as the 40GB models. I read that in another article. The price also played a factor.

I don't get them, myself. Didn't they make it official a while back, to use external HDD's and even get a manufacturer to help install an internal one? So why these new models? Sigh.

There was an article a while back stating that most consumers don't even realize the systems can have DVD functionality. If they're that clueless, I doubt they realize HOW to swap the HDDs or that Sony doesn't even care.

...What? The 80GB model was fine by my viewpoint. Just repackage that one with the Dualshock 3 and Sony's got a winner on their hands. Why the hell do they feel it's right to intro and discontinue models like shoes?

Oh what the hell, it comes with the Dual Shock 3 and a massive hard drive with a possible regular price of a standard package, people...for *bleep*'s sake.

I don't see why they keep bringing out new models (that might succeed or fail) when there is one model that everyone wants: Fans are demanding Sony bring back the 60gb because that had the features that everyone wanted. I don't remember why it was discontinued (probably because of the high price and low demand), but at the time we all believed Sony could come up with something better and cheaper.

But now that Sony has released all these different models with different (or lack of) features, people are realizing that "hey, this isn't what we wanted. It's just getting worse!"

I don't get it, did the 80 GB have BC? What was it that people were pissed off at the 80 GB about besides the price?

Only America got the 80gb though. Though I'd assume people were pissy about the 80gb's price, the unnecessary space, and the fact that it still didn't have 100% BC (I think it had somewhere between 85% - 95% which is good, but it's still not total BC and that's what people want).

At the moment, all we've got here (in Australia) is the 40gb, so we haven't had much choice when it comes to buying PS3s. It's quite common to see people asking for the 60gb in game stores, then being told that it isn't being sold anymore.

Oh, right. Other regions did get butt-screwed royally on that one. Well besides the price the rest is pretty much nitpicking though. You can never have too much space (unless it's a factor towards the price) and there's still BC which deals for more than half of the PS2's library.

Granted, the deal's not sweet for those that want to get rid of their PS2 but not the games themselves. The rest is a luxury I wish I had...hell I still have a 20 GB (bet ya bastards didn't even know anyone that had one, huh?) that has no Memory Stick slots, no Wifi, and a small hard drive (which i can fix).

Though I still gotta laugh at the people that are still waiting for the "perfect package" when they never grabbed the 60 GB while it was out.

Hey i have a theory, maybe they're phasing it out so they can make the 120 or 160GB hard drive space with Dualshock 3 and all the features including Full BC as the 60. I mean its a possibility. Since the production cost lowered to half, and the new 60nm chips are out, and that small cell chip model thing.

I just wish they would make up there mind, keep a constant and clear strategy Sony. People are growing tired of your switching back and forth. Sell the 80GB and the 40GB worldwide and people will be happy.

      Final Blade Jan 29, 08
Its not just about switching models. Like i said they're probably updating the materials in the console and since the 80GB was just a limited edition bundle i never expected that to stay forever. They might be bringing back the full BC with the next model, that is what everyone wants. Besides with games like DMC4 that makes you download the game to your hard-drive for 5GB that eats up your space very quickly.

Key, im not too bothered tbh, i've got the 60 gb im happy, im not gonna buy a whole new console just for the dualshock3, i'll buy it seperatly.

I have an 80g and picked up the dualshock 3 separately. Since Sony is finally starting to make a profit, it would be wise for them to stick with what is already out there instead of raising their production costs......AGAIN
