[Rumor] PS3 Slim? Come on, Sony! No new ideas?

StarJet | February 01, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
This might not be a surprise to many people as Sony has always thought of putting out Slimline versions of every PlayStation they've released. Now according to UK Magazine T3, it seems that a Slim PS3 is set to come out as well.
According to the United Kingdoms second most popular gizmo and gadget magazine, T3, Sony may not only be prepping the masses for a white PS3 with DualShock controllers, and expanding the hard drive of the high-end SKU to 160gb, but they may also be preparing a PS3 slim for release in the fall.

With Sony’s history of slimline designs in every console they’ve ever released, this doesn’t seem like that much of a stretch, but still one must wonder why they would do such a thing at this point in the PS3’s life cycle. Early adopters would become disillusioned, potential customers would be even more confused, and Sony would look like a company in turmoil; scrambling to do something ANYTHING to get a foothold in the current generation of consoles.

What other ideas should they have? Should they make a larger PS3? PS3 Fat? No, because that's stupid, because it makes more sense to make a smaller one that's also cheaper. It'll be a while before we see a slim PS3 though I do believe.

I guess people are forgetting that with cheaper materials to manufacture they can make smaller and energy efficient parts. I mean this is proof that this isn't too far off, Sony to reveal smaller, more efficient Cell processor at ISSCC 2008
So with time they can afford to make things smaller a better design, cause lets face it, the PS3 is pretty big compared to 360 and Wii. So this is a possibility. And besides as years go by better materials cheaper and smaller can be used and less the cost of the console. Hell this model could really tip the war in there favor. Like a $299 or maybe one day $199 and with that cheaper than both Wii and 360 and a better sales for them. So i don't see how this isn't possible.

Indeed but they're not in charge of production, flash back to the selling off of the Cell, the change in re-tooling for 45nm comes at a cost, you don't just start spitting out new wafers with a touch of the wand. As such they're not controlling the cost of the Cell units anymore.

However they have been making the Cell im pretty sure for 4 years now. Or possibly 3 years, so in essence its very possible technology has come along way since then, and they have the ability to produce smaller efficient Cell processors. I mean The PS3 was in development like 2-3 years, and since the Cell is the main part of the system you would think this would be possible, no.

You could be right, but im just saying its not like they just made this technology last year.

I actually noted that die shrinks are possible, it happens all the time, Intel and AMD do it, IBM does it, everyone does, the statement you produced though was from quite an overly optimistic view though given that Sony has sold off chip production to a new party. This means they can't just cut themselves a deal and call it ok. They have to hope that Toshiba feels that the re-tooling of the plants to 45nm will be worthwhile to their investment into the technology seeing as they did pay $850 million.

"No new ideas"? Are you complaining cuz they have no new design? That's pretty damn stupid.

Is it just me, or does the mock up picture look like a Wii glued to a gray colores PS3 faceplate?

I think it's ugly. What about the cooling fans?? Wouldn't this mean the Slim PS3 will be breaking down more often?? I wouldn't trust it. In this case size does matters.
Anyway why would I need a lighter PS3? I don't carry it around with me. I'm sure my concrete floor can take the weight perfectly fine.

Ditto, I don't like the looks of it, I don't even like the white colour (prefer black) -_-

Looks rather fake, too thin >_> Plus too fugly for Sony to actually release >_> The top just looks wrong compared to the boxy section that has the disk drive and stuff....

Plus, I don't expect they'll make a Slim until the PS4 is aobut to come out, I doubt they're even capable of making a PS3 nearly this thin yet >_>

For those of you who don't know, that picture isn't even real. Its an artist's CG rendition of a possible makeup. So yea, you can all relax.

As far as 'Come on Sony, no new ideas' .....what?

Wouldn't be a bad idea. But i think it would be too early for a slim PS3. I would stick with the original anyway.

^ I think it's too early as well. I cba to get another one already, my current PS3 isn't even a year old yet.

    But I guess it's only a rumor.

Way too early by a long shot. I only bought my PS3 say, six months ago, it would be very bad press for them to tell us already that there's a new and better version that we all miss out on.

This is just a rumour. Sony wouldn't be studip enough to release a slimline PS3 this early on. Their biggest concern is money, and a slimline PS3 isn't the best way to make a profit at the moment, given how well the PS3 is selling at the moment.

Their recent strategies have been slashing features, and now they would release a decorative improvement? Seems odd.

It's strange. The momentum Sony has gained in the last few months are in so much jeopardy because of all these...strange changes to the system. Adding, slashing, reducing features and now a cosmetic change. Seriously, I'm just gonna wait until all the models are made clear and then I will pick one to purchase. Never thought I'd say that about a video game system before, it's like buying a car

    Concerning the title...

New ideas? What are you expecting them to do with the PS3? A Slimline PS3 is really the only option. What did you want them to do, make a PS3 Drink; a PS3 with an 8-foot straw that feeds you whatever drink you want as you play? Or maybe a PS3 Twirl; a PS3 with a twist-shape? Of course not; those concepts are ridiculous. Anything other than slim is just unnecessary and rather silly. If you yourself can't think of a new shape that would be worth it, don't expect Sony to break their balls trying to do it themselves.

Haha, well said, Red 9. A slim version is sure to sell well, just look at the PS2 slim. But I agree that they won't go into this anytime soon.

The reason that the PS3 is so big is because they decided to put the gigantic power block inside of the console instead of outside like on the 360.

So, basically, it will have a big clunky power cube with the new design.

    Incidnia | February 04, 2008
Unless in the 2 or 3 years until something like this comes out they develop a smaller, more efficient power block.

I really hope that comes out! I don't have a PS3 yet and I don't really have space for one as it's so big!

talk about not having space. if i had the bucks needed for a ps3, i'd definitely find space for it. no space. yeah, right.
