Devil May Cry 4.... 20 Minute Wait Before You Play The Game

Krunal | February 04, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
It's quite unfortunate when you have a game, put it into your console in the hopes of start playing immediately, when you realise that to play the game you have to wait another 20 minutes. In the grand scheme of things, another 20 minutes for someone isn't much considering how long they waited for the game to be released in the first place, however to everyone that has gotten a much awaited game, after it's in their hands, it's not just the minutes, but every second you don't play the game that counts.

Unfortunately, Devil May Cry 4 will keep you waiting for another 20 minutes after you first start the game before you can actually play the game, whilst you wait for the game to install to the hard drive... yes this is a PS3 only problem. And to boot, it will take around 5GB of your hard drive with little to no benefit over the XBOX360 version which doesn't require an installation... so what really is the point of waiting 20 minutes for something that's not going to make much of a difference? A couple seconds saved here or there... is 5 GB of space worth the hassle?
Following that the opening load time on PS3 was five seconds against eight on 360. And then three seconds versus four, and four versus five seconds in following load screens, PS3 - 360. As you can see there's not much in it.

You've got to be very impatient to let this bother you, plus this "20 minute wait" makes the rest of the experience all the more enjoyable and smooth.
    Go make yourself lunch.

In general most load screens aren't that long to begin with, it's just in our head that they are taking forever because it's such an abrupt change of pace in gaming. So the fact is, a difference between 8 and 5 seconds is pretty significant.

Also, aside from this small difference in load times between the two versions, it has been said by many publications that the PS3 has a more stable framerate at times and less screen tearing. Who knows if this is also due to the fact that a lot of things are stored easily on the HDD.

As an avid PC gamer install times are something to get used to and very much beneficial. Get over it.

So the install is mandatory? I thought it was optional for faster load times...

Whilst it's optional for some, some games do force you to install it, though it's all in the name of faster speeds/loading time.

Why do you have to instal things on the PS3 anyway? I never got it.

It's supposed to improve the load times for the games, however as CVG tested it out, it only improved it by a couple of seconds, not enough to make a real difference... though I guess all those seconds do add up as well.

It also improves how the game performs overall just read the reviews the Xbox 360 version has screen tearing and framerate issues, i think its pretty obvious that the install makes a pretty noticeable difference.

I just don't understand why Devil May Cry, of all games, has such a large installer. Even Uncharted didn't install anything, but whatever. Its a one time process. .

I'd hate to see add-ons for DMC coz that would mean you can't delete the file, since deleting the file would mean you'd delete the add-ons... doesn't it?

I believe you're correct, but I think it varies from game to game. Its not built into the OS to save that way.

Aye, I made that mistake when I erased my Oblivion game file which had Shivering Isles in it.

Great thing is you can always redownload it for free, bad thing is that it's only upto another 4 times (after the initial download) which you never know when you'll end up using up. I really got to get myself an internal harddrive.

5GB is a decent chunk.......I hope more games don't start doing this.

All this complaining is so poorly throught out. "I hope more games don't start doing this."

And why not? If it nets you better performance and faster load times? It's just like playing any game on a PC, once you reach the limit of your HDD you gotta delete some of your old games and make room for the new ones.

It's because it is a new precedent for console gaming. While this is a tried and true standard for PC gaming, this kind of end-user space management hasn't really been done before in consoles.

The fact that it is a mandatory install has some people riled up; especially those with the 20GB.

Because I plan on having my system for years, and building an extensive library, just as my PS2 library with over 50 games. If I have 50 PS3 games that need 5GB to run.......where does that leave me? Erasing it every time I want to play something else and waiting 20min to reinstall in the future. It's not very practical.....hence your response is poorly thought out.

It doesnt look like a big problem to be honest.
The best thing is the gameplay is better on PS3 beacuase the x360 controler sucks for action games imo.

PS3 controller has buttons strategically placed for button-mashers. 360 controller is designed for FPS's and RTS's.

Devil May Cry IS NOT a button masher. It can be played like one, sure, any fighting game can be, but you're not going to actually be successful button mashing on anything but maybe the easy difficulty.

DMC is notorious for having a deeper combat system than meets the eye, they always have and still do.

If you read his post he wasn't saying that DMC is a button smasher, although DMC and god of war uses big flash combo's, which Ninja Gaiden doesn't which is why i like it. However i still like GOW and DMC.

All he's saying is the controller is made different and suits better for games, I.E PS controller for DMC, GOW, etc, and 360 Controller Halo and Other FTS games.

Finalblade, please quote the part of his post where he's not saying DMC is a button masher? His entire comment is alluding to his perception that DMC is a button masher.

Besides, Ninja Gaiden Sigma works flawlessly on the PS3 controller and I would never play a Devil May Cry game with anything but a DualShock controller. Love my new DualShock3.

Now DMC does use big flashy combos, which i guess can be considered Button smashing which to a degree i agree with. NGS isn't a button smashing game, it requires skill and patients.

You say it yourself, it can be played as one. When I played DMC, I played it as a button-masher as I did the DMC4 demo.

Here's the thing, you got games like Oblivion which...well let's face it, waiting on installing data takes from 30 seconds to a minute, same goes for Shivering Isles...This is OBLIVION we're talking about, a game that's 10,000,000x bigger than Devil May Cry will ever be.

WHY do we have to wait 20 MINUTES for a linear game like DMC4?

Krunal DMC4 won't have DLC, its been stated by Hiroyuki Kobayashi that DMC4 is so big it doesn't need DLC, so you guys don't need to worry about that.

And i told you guys already that you need to install the game for 5GB before playing it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone here. And this install makes the game that much better for the PS3 version compared to the 360 counter part. Hiroyuki Kobayashi did ask 360 crew if they could add this as well but they declined saying this will upset man 360 owners who doesn't have a HDD, so this was intended for the 360 version as well, which is another down fall by not adding a HDD as mandatory.

We'll see about that. I wouldn't mind some DLC actually. Unless they already have a young Dante next-gen model unlockable.

Its not going to happen here read this
        quote Hiroyuki Kobayashi
"With DMC4, we feel that we have created a game that has a huge amount of content right out of the box without the need to download extra content,"
if you need the Link here shows that it won't have it. There's just no need for it, and i agree.

I guess that's good news. I'm going to have to keep 1GB of data for folklore now, since removing it would mean losing my downloads

I got the game today and the install was about 17mins or so; it really wasn't bad. I wasn't even really sitting there, was up making dinner and the install seemed to go by fast. Plus, even while it installs it does give you dialog / story information, character info, etc.

Can you view the story/dialog/character info once it's finished the downloading (via another menu?)
