Upon reading this article, by Kathryn Jean Lopez which claims that all men who play video-games (and other similar activities) are "man-boys" (Men who choose to live as a child, instead of being a responsible adult in a loving marriage), Amanda Marcotte felt the need to shock the author of the article with a few little revelations:

  • Women play video games too!
  • Playing video games does not make someone incapable of becoming a responsible, intelligent, and productive adult.
  • The Xbox (and other consoles) does not destroy marriages... Women who complain about their husbands spending more time with games than with them should shut-up and just play with their husband - TOGETHER.

    Good on you, Amanda!

But the evidence for Lopez’s thesis—that women are independenting ourselves out of male love and devotion, because men are emotionally shallow creatures who can’t love freely but have to be bribed into it—is a tad thin. A stiff breeze blows it all away. Like the dreaded marriage-destroying properties of the Xbox.
    quote Kathryn Jean Lopez.
Mark Loring reminds me of a letter in Sax’s book from a woman named Sarah. She says her husband is stuck on Xbox, and while she loves him and so will tolerate a certain amount of his lack of motivation to grow up, she is “constantly haunted” by something he said: “He said that I might need to lower my expectations in life because he didn’t know whether he could provide them for me. What I find funny now is that I’m the real provider. I don’t feel like I’m part of a team. It’s wearing on me.” I hope that Sarah and her husband wound up better off than the Lorings.
Yes, your husband plays the Xbox all the time because you have the nerve to make your own money. That’s the ticket. Back in the days before middle class women had independent careers, men were careful to spend most of their free time lavishing love and attention on their wives, so much that you began to get sick of it. And of course, it’s impossible for the Xbox to be a social occasion that couples could enjoy together—women don’t have fun! Next you’ll be telling me they can do math.

Now excuse me, but I’m going to drag my childish ass over to play the Xbox. Wonder if Lopez knows that you don’t actually need a penis to work the controller.

Some women need to quit their bitchin and throw out their stigma that games are childish and they're embarrassed to play. Every girl I've coaxed into playing has had a great time, although they normally suck epicly.

Yeah, gaming would only mess with relationships if:

      A - Guy is a prick, emotionally very shallow, or antisocial...that isn't gaming's fault, it is the guy's >_>

B - Female hates games for some reason, and wants the guy to get rid of their games...As IF, totally unreasonable >_>

C - Brings to light other things...In a sense, helps them realize they have certain problems, gaming just showed them it, somehow >_>

Gaming is just like any other hobby...People just want to blame the new entertainment medium...Like TV, books, etc...Anything can cause strain on relationships, gaming is just one of them, and it isn't gaming itself that does it, it would just bring to light a pre-existing problem, or someone is just being unreasonable...

So yeah, gaming is just like other mediums of entertainment blamed for damaging relationships...it is the PEOPLE at fault, not the games >_>

Well said. Gaming is not a big disaster. It's a safe form of entertainment, when used by *bleep*ed up people, messes things up.

THANK YOU AMANDA!!! Seriously, this bash was completely sad. All it did was prove that people like Kathryn are too biased and too closed minded to try new things or try and see the other side of things.

I say lock her and her kind in a room, they aren't allowed to come out till they have a DECENT amount of gaming time under their belts. Then let them make their opinions, although it might be nice to also tell them that husbands aren't meant to be right next to their wifes 24/7. Don't get me wrong, they should definitely be there a fair bit, but to expect them around all the time is ridiculous. They have interests and friends and things to do as well.

I do have a question though, there's always been idiots, but what the *bleep* is with the sudden influx of idiots and bizarre stories and such last year and this year so far? Don't people like Kathryn know what your generally meant to do in life anymore?

Nearly every marriage will have those times where the wife will be "You always spend more time playing such and such (poker, bowling, golf, sports, XBOX, PS3) than with me!" And there will be times where guys try to ditch the wife to do those things.......it's been going on for centuries.

If you don't take the time to spend some loving caring time with your wife and family......then you will get a nagger. It could be much worse, he could be addicted to porn and not the XBOX...LOL

Utter crap. Amanda Marcotte is perfectly right, and I think Kathryn Jean Lopez should stop moping about such small things.

Wonder if Lopez knows that you don’t actually need a penis to work the controller.

Iam sure there are marriges that started with video games aswell. For example, dudes at a party, playing Guitar Hero and expert, gamer chick comes up amazed at his skills. They then talk about how awesome Call of Duty is, they then go on a date to play some games at the chicks house, boom, they fall in love. See? Amanda is right, girls play games too and they dont destroy marriages, they actually start them.
