What's it like working for Miyamoto? Let's ask Mario Galaxy's director.

Everyone knows of Shigeru Miyamoto, but what's it like working with him? You would think that, being the chief of Nintendo, he'd be a fun guy. Well, according to Super Mario Galaxy's director, Yoshiaki Koizumi, he is.

It's nice to know that Miyamoto isn't the sort of boss that hits his employees over the head with blunt objects.

And I must admit, it would make my day seeing Miyamoto demonstrate how he thinks Mario should swim. VGet the video camera, please.
Link’s Awakening, Super Mario 64, Ocarina Of Time, Majora’s Mask, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy: what’s the first name to pop into your head? It’s almost impossible not to think of Shigeru Miyamoto, but it’s hard to conceive any other name to attach to such a remarkable series of titles. Yet a man called Yoshiaki Koizumi has quietly toiled on each one of them, most recently as game director for Super Mario Galaxy.

“Mr Miyamoto is known for taking lots of time to create the best player experience. His demands are numerous and exacting, but I actually really like that. He’s effortless in explaining what he wants,” Koizumi explains, recounting a moment during the development of Super Mario 64 where Miyamoto excitedly tried to describe how he felt Mario should swim – by swimming around his office. “I began swimming around with him,” Koizumi laughs. “We get along well together, and time files by when we’re working. Before we know it, sometimes, it’s 2am.”

Miyamoto excitedly tried to describe how he felt Mario should swim – by swimming around his office “I began swimming around with him,” laughs Koizumi.

Did they know while they were creating Super Mario Galaxy that they were creating something so groundbreaking? “Whenever we make a game and approach a new element and begin to flesh it out, we always think: ‘Oh, this is totally new!’ and that excitement builds as we layer all of our new elements together,” Koizumi begins. “The real difficult part comes when you’ve pulled a lot of new elements together and you actually have to see how the game plays. But I try to stay on that track where I always feel like I’m doing something new.”

Swimming around in the office? How...just how? Miyamoto's work is untouchable, though. My favorites are OoT and more recently, SMG. It's amazing how fun they make these adventures, even though it's similar stoylines, saving the 'damsel in distress' and all.

Good one. Seriously, big people of gaming companies should be friendly, goo humored people. Way to go, Mr. Miyamoto!

I'd love to have walked in on those two swimming around in the office. XD
I could just imagine them rolling around on the floor trying to do Mario's swimming stroke. Or maybe Miyamoto was running around the room waving his arms about in a butterly-esque stroke, while Koizumi is running after him saying, "Like this Mr Miyamoto? Like this?"

Either way, it's great to know that Miyamoto is a nice, fun guy to be around. Heck, he's the guy that runs Nintendo. Being fun should be a job requirement for that position. XD

I hope to one day work at Nintendo as a character designer, despite the odds against me. I wonder if I will ever see the 'swim'.

That's so great. Swimming around the office? You don't hear many game developers do that!

How can they swim in the office? There would have to be either a pool in the office or no gravity so you can just float around.
